Softmod Playstation 3

Hi, I am a veteran with softmodding the Wii and burning/playing backups (downloaded games). I showed my nephew how I can play downloaded games for the wii. He is interested in doing something similar with his Playstation 3. I tried doing research online, and I’m not sure if it’s possible on the Playstation 3. I am willing to buy a modchip / USB dongle if necessary, but if there’s a free way (especially if it doesn’t require opening the Playstation, and soldering), of course that’s better. I asked him what version of PS3 he has and he said the first one that came out. I’m assuming that’s the fat one. What information (like what version of firmware he has) do I need from him in order to do this? Also, what do you recommend I download/buy (specific brand/product)? If you have a certain website which is best to buy from, please link to it. I told him that he’s probably looking at about $50 in hardware for a modchip, but this is based on nothing. I don’t have any soldering experience, except for when I was in middle school.
Finally, once the PS3 is hard/soft modded, can I use DVD – R or DVD + R or do I need to use Blu Ray discs? For Wii, I’ve always used DVD – Rs, but I’ve never played on a PS3, so I’m not too familiar with them. If I need Blu Ray discs, is there a certain type for PS3? What kind of burner do you recommend? I get that this is a big investment, but he said he just spent $70 on a new game, so even if this is a $250 investment, it will pay for itself after about 5 games.

U can Copy the games Using Blu ray..but u cant play them on PS3 etc:
But U can also Jailbreak them
I have a PS3.. and it was a waste of money (fact)
The PS3 ( too slow )and does not compare with using a PC for games

being one of the first models aka a phat ps3 means its hackable there is no modchip for ps3 ……. but there are 3 options (1) you can buy a hardware flasher and down grade it to firmware 3.55 and install a cfw as cant install a cfw form any higher fw than that there are 2 types of flashers out there progskeet for nand chip consoles of e3 flasher for nor chip consoles you need to see what type ps3 he has by looking on the back model number “CECHL03” ect http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/SKU_Models
