Require Help Selecting a new mobo+cpu+ram

September 26th, 2013

Hey All,
Well I Require a new Mobo + CPU.
Purpose :
This PC will be Mainly for Data Storage of my multiple hard drives, it will be running ubuntu 11.04 ( for now)
Also Since I have some other Hardware lying around, I will be using that also,
I also want it to do Full HD Playback, and maybe in the future a Raid Setup with a raid card. Also would like it to play music, with good quality.
The Main purpose will be archiving and using / modifying data on the hard drives
Requirements :
Well I need a Mobo which has Mainly 6 Sata Ports, 4 DIMM Slots and a few extra Pci slots for cards and so.
Also USB 3.0
Old Hardware ( Not really old, before the current board broke down) :
Want to Use :
Coolermaster 650W PSU
CoolerMaster Elite 430
3*2 TB Hard Drives
1 * LG DVD Drive
Galaxy GT430 1GB
Have, but might not want to use :
2*2 Gb DDR2 800Mhz Ram
Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 Sound Card ( as My previous board did not have 5.1).
Intel p4 3.2 Ghz ( was in the old PC)
What I Think :
Well I have thought to go with the 2100 i3, but yet been pondering on what board to get.
The H67 is useless for me as I have a Discrete GFX solution, and why would i need to over clock a Server processor so p67 is also pointless. Anyway I have seen a few boards from Asus and Gigabyte, fell free to recommend me any of em. Also Asrock is not avialble where i live ( india). So Please Don’t recommend that.
Oh yeah 1333Mhz Ram or 16000Hz. not sure of that either.
need about 4GB Of it, thinking corsair
Budget :
300$ = 15000 INR
Keep 25$ + – as prices are a tad higher here.
What I need from You folks :
The i3 is not confirmed, but i was hoping to get something decent, i might upgrade to a 24 server bay when i fill up my case, hence don’t want to upgrade again.
So long lasting hardware, and something new so i get support too.

Processors with Integrated GPU is enough for what your proposing (a workstation).
This saves you the problem of cleaning the discrete card, heat and power.
It happens that AMD’s A4 series have a far better integrated video card than what Intel is offering.
Gigabyte’s motherboards are using newer mosfets, so you can’t go wrong with that.
You said you wanted “good sound quality”, with integrated solutions, its all about the same.
You’d need something like a Asus Sonar with a good set of speakers.
You should use DDR3 1600 for that CPU, but you can use slower modules since you hardly notice it.
I imagine that the computer will be turned on for a long time, so a good motherboard is a good idea, one with coolers over the mosfets next to the CPU.
Something like a GIGABYTE GA-A75-UD4H
Mind you, the Corsair memory over here have high RMA rates.

I was Really hoping for a Intel Solution Swords To Plowshares.
Well I asked around and I was Recommend this :
http://ark.intel.com/products/53481/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G620T-%283M-Cache-2_20-GHz%29
and for the board i was recommend this
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-db65al.html
Anyway i loved that motherboard, which you linked me too.
Soo many pci slots..
Is it possible i can get a similar board for intel sandy bridge ?

Look around Newegg, its what everyone does.
If you want more expansion slots, it would have to be a ATX motherboard.
I would have to look as well, but I don’t build Intel rigs that’s for sure especially ones that are too cheap.
I like to spoon fed to the competition as you know there are only 2 decent consumer level CPU manufacturers, you have to give hope to the other company otherwise you can kiss competitive pricing goodbye.
If you want speed for your requirements, it would be faster hard drives.

Get something like this with;
SATA3, USB3, Gigabit LAN, 6 total SATA ports, 8GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge.

Only $250 after shipping…

Be advised that some consumer boards don’t play with stuff like FreeNAS (which you SHOULD be using).
