Q: Online Backup

August 29th, 2013

Greetings guys,
I would like to backup ALL my portfolio files (images/source-files) but I am unsure of what internet-service to use. I was recommended to use Amazon S3 but I would like to know if there are any alternative?
We are talking about 20gb of images/source-files.
Regards,
Mike

20 GB is going to work out fairly expensive, do you really need it to be on-line ?
I wouldn’t trust an on-line backup as my only option either, (you can stick them on a 32 GB pen-drive and/or data dvd’s)
Answer #2
I have a backup of the files on 7 different harddrives in my PC, but if it breaks down, explodes or suddenly a meteor hits my house, then I’m kinda screwed So, I thought of uploading them all to the internet to have a more solid backup. I’m just not sure what service to use, there are thousands of places on google results >.<

That does it,No more 24/Smallville for you!!
If your really that paranoid,Just get a safe deposit box in the bank and store one of your backup HDDs there,Take it out
every now and then for updating.
Answer #4
Haha Yeaaah but what if the bank gets robbed, overflooded or destroyed by a riot? Then I’m screwed man!!
Nah but.. Really, anything could happen in my house lol, so I rather have an external backup somewhere I was thinking, as I said about Amazon S3 but, I’m not sure if theres anythign better. Someone also mentioned Google Drive but, thats not 100% developed??
My files should be stored in:
Fireproof conditions
Waterproof conditions
Tornado-safe buildning (I would prefer the files to be secured underground)
– If underground, the locations should be 100% earthquake secure.
I think thats about it
Answer #5
I give up dude,I’d say nothing will help you (except medications perhaps),Your just way too paranoid.
Answer #6
send them to NASA ?
seriously you are way to paranoid. keep the files u need on a pen or something and buy a safe ?
if u get hit by a meteorite in your house ur f’d anyway so it wouldnt matter where u stored it lol.
Answer #7
Amazon is good.
Answer #8
I keep my very important data dvd/br’s (no not my porn) in a fireproof/waterproof safe that is concreted into the floor (we don’t get many tornados or earthquakes in the UK)
DRAŽEN has said Adrive, i remember using them in the past, and forgot all about it
You might want to consider encrypting the files if you are uploading them to some site where you don’t know who is peeking
http://box.com
is pretty good, but only 5GB free.
Answer #9
I have a collection of free storage sites here. I recommend Amazon 5 gb free..

Answer #10
If you need unlimited storage,
Carbonite still has an unlimited plan…

Answer #11
why not just back them up to a megaupload premium account?
$200 one time fee, infinite storage and security. not to mention you can back them up to other accounts from that…
Answer #12
Almost all online backup storage providers like Dropbox, Carbonite and the myriad of others utilize Amazon S3. You can be sure that your data is completely secure from physical damage once on their servers. I use Tarsnap, another reseller of Amazon S3 but one that takes security above everything else and I couldn’t be happier with them.
Google also offers increased storage if you pay. If your backups are mostly pictures you can use Picasa which would make your life a lot easier.

My backup system is this:
Raid1 in my computer
2 external hard drives. One that I regularly backup to that stays in the house. Another that I sync to from the first external hard drive weekly and keep outside of my house (in my truck typically). While online backups are nice, and I do sometimes dump things online for added backup protection, I prefer having things readily available should I need them. Additionally, I can keep an image of my computer as well as individual files. Online backups tend to take a little too much of my time when it comes to restores, but if you’re really concerned about backups, it’s definitely good to have that extra option.
Answer #14
Guys guys guys, its all ironic hehe, ofc. I’m not afraid of a meteor or earthquake
– But thank you for all the repies and useful links guys! I will go through each of them and see what attracts me the most.
Though, I do admit that I never thought of buying a lifetime Megaupload account for $200, it’s actually a cool solution but I’ll check out the other links before making my decision.
The reason why having a backup at home isn’t enough, is simply because I have soon 5 years of work (photoshop files, 3D files, renderings etc.) so I wouldn’t risk loosing any of them if something SHOULD happen at home, a robbery could end my life
But again, thanks guys! You all get a big star in my book!
Answer #15
Another option is to buy a cheap Linux VPS and set up vsftpd or pure-ftpd on it,There are plenty of backup
apps with FTP support.

I still think you should be on meds
Can’t you see how ridicules this line of thought is? Okay let’s say your house will get broken into while your in it and the robber
will shoot you dead and steal your HDDs,Will you be pissed afterwards? No,As you’ll cease to exist!,Unless of course
you found a way to resurrect the dead,Then you’ll really be pissed!
Answer #16
if the files are really important, go for a paid storage site, coz sites like FSC MU etc, you never know..
i just got wiped out a week ago on FSC.
all files GONE in one sweep..
suckers :/
