PSU, Mobo or CPU problem?

November 18th, 2013

Alright so I’ve been trying to figure out what the issue with my computer is. It will sometimes shut down in the middle of gaming as if the power cord had been unplugged. After it turns off like this it will not boot up again until I turn the PSU on and off. If i do not restart the PSU it will turn on but nothing will come up on the screen and the normal start up beep won’t come form the mobo. I’ve cleaned everything in the computer, temps are good, and I redid the thermal paste on the cpu because I thought that was the problem but it changed nothing.
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

250 GB HD
4870 Radeon
2.5 ghtz Dual Core Amd CPU
Asus Mobo
stock cooling on everything and a pretty spacious case

Answer #1
Do you have another power supply you can toss into it?
Answer #2
are your ram timings and voltages correct ?
i had a similar problem and it was fixed after I set the voltage manually.
Answer #3
Which PSU do you have exactly? Provide the model as it appears on the sticker.
Answer #4
I don’t think the ram timings are off because this problem started randomly. Everything worked and then one day it started shutting off during games, anything from TF2 to Magicka to CS:S. The PSU is Rosewill Xtreme Series RX950-D-B 950W. I tried swapping out GPUs too (EVGA 512-P3-N975-AR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3) but it did nothing (well the Radeon runs hotter but yeah).
and no I don’t have a spare PSU. Also, I just ran FurMark for 20 minutes and at about 19:45 it shutdown again (as a side note my gpu did get super hot (97c max) but I don’t think temp is the issue (it’s not always hot when the shut down occurs)).
Also, this is my Mobo just in case Asus M3N78 PRO
Answer #5
Try a new power supply, might have to go and buy yourself one I was going to suggest some CPU stress testing (Like Prime95) but you already mentioned your temps are OK.
You won’t need another 950W for those specs, so try a 500-700W and see how that goes. Hell I doubt you’ll need over 550 to be honest, you’re just testing after all.
Answer #6
Mate i have a similar problem but with newer components (also asus board)
Does you mobo has lights on them? For example: if something is wrong with the CPU, a red led light will light up on the mobo
Thats was my case
I can tell you it’s not the PSU in my case, because i replaced the PSU with a new one and the problem was still there
I RMA my cpu & mobo and now the guys at the store are trying to figure out my problem. As soon as they contact me, I’ll tell you what the problem was, because I think you have the same issue
It could be a CPU cooler problem!! which one are u using? The stock CPU cooler or an aftermarket???
I use an aftermarket CPU cooler (Scythe Mugen 2 rev B)
EDIT:
Got it back from RMA and they said it was a Mobo problem so they replaced it and now everything is fine, maybe thats also ur problem?
Answer #7
1. What board (motherboard model)?
2. What CPU model?
3. What sticks are you mixing (memory)?
4. Temperature readings?
Answer #8
Could be a typical overheating issue, monitor the temperatures while gaming.
