I didn’t quite understand the question, but I’ll try to answer it.
Registering a domain and setting up an email server for a domain are completely different things.
The short answer would be, sure you may register the domain at any registrar and set up an e-mail server to work with that same domain on your favorite hosting service.

  • By registering the domain you become his\her rightful owner (just that and nothing more).
  • To use the domain, you need access to a DNS server. Currently, most of the registrars have their own DNS server(s) and provide that service for free. Even further, most of the current registrars have an easy online management panel that allow you to configure all kind of DNS entries on their own DNS server(s).
  • Once you got the DNS server configured, with the MX Record pointed out the your host’s IP address, you just ask your hosting service to add the new domain to your account (depending on the “hosting package” that you’ve acquired, this action might be free or not).
If you do not have an account at the hosting service yet, just create one, buy the hosting package and tell them that you’ve already have do domain registered.

Resuming, to use an e-mail service that isn’t offered by the registrar where you bought the domain, you have to:

  • Configure the DNS server, by creating a new IP entry (for example):
    • mail.domain.com – 205.23.65.28 (your email server IP address)
  • Configure the DNS server, by changing the MX Record (on the same example to):
    • MX Recordmail.domain.com | Priority – High
  • Notify your hosting service that you wish to use a new domain to an account.
  • Configure (within Cpanel, or whatever) the email server to accept the emails from the new domain.

If you specified the registrar and the hosting service, I could be more helpful. Anyway, I hope that this information helps you!
