Philips HD Media player HMP3000

September 5th, 2013

Hi,
I have shortlisted the following media player as it is within my budget I am getting it for Rs 3600/-
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=en&scy=pl&ctn=HMP3000/12
Also it supports all of the major formats which I want like BD ISO/M2TS/MKV etc….
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=HMP3000%2F12&dct=FAQ&faqview=1&new_tmpl=1&refdisplay=HAV_MEDIA%20BOX_003&refnr=0085360&scy=PL&slg=AEN
The only problem is it only supports 2ch audio and does not support DTS HD MA/5.1/7.1 audio.
It lists that it has Digital audio output, if I connect receiver in Digital audio output which decodes all audio will it give 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound?
thanks for any help.

Looks like it has optical out audio, so you are ok for 5.1. Yep you will need to connect to amp that does 5.1.

Here’s a better one at that price range. Does almost the same thing for less.

M8 I think it does not support bluray/DVD ISO files. Also I don’t see this product listed in ebay india so there will be warranty issues.

The Philips does not support DTS HD MA passthrough to an AV receiver, only down mixing to stereo.

This one does but it only has coaxial output and no optical. Similar specced players for about the same price also have coaxial rather than optical outs.

A much better player but might be a bit outside your price range

If you check which Hong Kong sellers will ship to India you might find a better media player. I will recommend that you find one which can handle MKV header compression or you will have lots of issues playing files and have to keep remuxing them in order to get them to play.
There is this site which is India based but the media player range is more up market ie higher priced.

Thanks a lot buddy. I could not find similar link earlier detailing so much information.

I think I can live with the fact it does not passthrough DTS HD MA as it is very cheap and it passthrough all other audio formats like DTS/DTS-HD HR etc..
Also it supports a lot of formats and I have a lot of Bluray ISO for which I actually need this.
I really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks once again.

You really should consider the MKV header compression issue because it is becoming more and more common and some players don’t support it and require every such file to be remuxed before they can be played. I would ask any manufacturer I intended purchasing from specifically whether the device supports MKV header compression because it will be a real hassle having to keep remuxing files before they can be played.
For pass through, check what audio is on the Blu Ray ISOs that you wish to play because some could use DTS HD-MA and you would only get stereo down mix at best for them.

Sure m8. I will confirm if the player supports MKV header compression.
I wasn’t aware of this problem.
I will also check which audio format is in the bluray.
Thanks for the advice.
