No wireless connection on reinstall
March 14th, 2014
WinXP 32-bit
Dell Optiplex GX260
Unless you have upgraded the wireless card in your puter, just go to Dell Support, and put your Service Tag number (on a sticker on your pc) in there and redownload the original drivers.
If you have put in your own wireless card, go to the manufacturers website and download from there.
Uninstall your wireless card from Device Manager (start > run > devmgmt.msc), reboot and then install the new drivers.
That’s what I did. I installed the driver Intel x8254 1000 from the website.
Before I installed the driver I went to device manager and saw this one. http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/pro1000mt_server_adapter.htm
I just recently reinstalled it so the hardware of the computer is still the same. I don’t know why there isn’t any wireless internet connection though.

That is not a wireless card, it is a Gigabit MT Server Adapter
*Edit – use your service tag at the Dell Support website for your country, and see what wireless card came in the computer (or just look inside).
Take a look yourself. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=RC1084719&l=en&s=k12&os=WW1&osl=en&ServiceTag=HN4TQ21
I also forgot to mention a missing “Ethernet Controller” under device manager.
Your DELL did not come with a wireless card,It’s clearly a 3rd party one,Is it a USB one or PCI? Of what manufacturer/model?
I guess it has to be a PCI one. I’m not sure. I’ve had this computer for a while. There’s no external USB anywhere. Is my only option to open it up?

Thanks paro. It led me to a realtek driver (RTL8185)
I now have a wireless icon, but it shows no wireless networks at all. I’m sure it’s working because this laptop is connected to it. And there usually is 12 other connections in the list.
cheers guys, power cut in my street
@iAsian your system has LOM (Lan on motherboard) so download the Intel driver v6.2.21.19, A01
or you can get it here

*Edit, right click on the “wireless icon” and open Network Connections and see if your wireless is disabled
It’s enabled. Only if I right click and hit view “available wireless networks” it doesn’t give me anything. Although everything else in my house is connected by the router (linksys wrt54g )
OK, try this
Start > Control panel (classic view) > Network Connections
Double click on the “Wireless Network connection” icon
Click the “Properties” button
Check the 2 boxes at the bottom (show icon… & notify me…)
Click on the “Wireless Networks” tab, and check the box “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.”
Click OK
The box has already been checked.

Did you download the latest one from the Realtek site ?
When you used to connect, did you use the Realtek software or Windows ?

Doesn’t work. I believe it was windows software because it never said “Wireless Network Connetion *4*”. That number was never there. Or maybe it was just an outdated driver.

Or maybe you were using 3rd party software to connect (or didn’t have the box checked to show wireless networks).
It still sounds like an incorrect driver.

Unless you can find the original install CD or manual that will give us a clue.
It is quite easy, presumably you have done it before to install the wireless card ?
Just open it up and look for the part number or any other distinguishing ID on stickers on the card itself.
Here’s a manual for your puter
