Need to install a wireless card in my desktop pc?

August 6th, 2016

Just moved into a new apartment and the only cable outlet is in the living room, but I want to use my pc in the bedroom. So, I guess I will just buy a router and put it in the living room and than just install a wireless card on my pc. My question is what type of card or usb should I get? I am about 30 feet max from where the router would be. Would a USB adapter be fine? I still have to check and see if I have any pciE slots open.

I have a few usb sticks running and they are, how would Dolly Parton say it .. “Fine and dandyyyyy”
Just don’t buy one of those mini-usb ones. Their antenna systems really suck.
My fav of the three I am currently using is the ASUS AC53.
More expensive than many of the other choices, but I would recommend it.
Now, you can also skip the wireless and explore the Powerline options that basically turns your electrical into internet outlets. I know the option is there, that many people like it, but I haven’t ever tried it.
Answer #2
Is your signal strength just as strong as it would be if you were using a pciE card?

Yep; this one is about 50ft away with 2 walls between.
Answer #4
you should better install pcie wifi card . it will act as a laptop wifi and itll be intergrated. no hassle.
Answer #5
Why use a slot that can be better used for something that can only be done through PCI?
Answer #6
Unless you have some super high speed internet, then a 300Mbps dongle, such as this, will be fine.

Answer #7
It’s not the net connection really ; get the best the router will support.
Answer #8
Well the way I am looking at is 30 feet is not far so just about anything should work. What you guys think about linksy vs belkin?
Answer #9
Everything will work yes, but the speed of the connection can be substantially different: theoretically you could use a carrier pigeon to take a note to your friend, have him look something up and print out a few pages, and have it sent back after the bird has his water and feed

Personally, I avoid anything Linksys. I used them quite a bit until Cisco took over, and then something seemed to happen to quality/performance/price. It’s been a few years, so maybe things have improved.
Belkin – Had tried one Belkin router and had it back to the store the next day.
Answer #10
So the way i sounds is go with anything ASUS?
Answer #11
Asus, Netgear, Dlink
Linksys and Belkin may be ok too; since it has been awhile, I can’t say my experience is current on those. It’s always a good idea to check out the online reviews.
Also, your local computer shop (not the warehouse variety) to see what they carry. Smaller shops often ditch products that have a high return rate pretty quickly.
Answer #12
I like Netgear and alsways suggest them, but thats me.
Can you you not run a 30 foot cable to the bedroom? Drill a hole in the cornor of the wall that might not be noticed?
Answer #13
Why not just use long Ethernet cables? Unless you just want wireless.
Answer #14
The way the apartment is laid out it will be hard to run the cable without it being noticed.
