Need camera on phone without the phone

January 22nd, 2020

Hey all
In college sometimes in the class the teacher puts up a picture of a slide or draws a diagram on the board. We are supposed to copy them down but its such a pain and i always end up not listening to whats being said when im busy writing. All other people do is just pul out thier phones, snap it without the teacher seeing and its easy to explain that you were just doing something else if you get caught..however pulling out a digital camera is blatently obvious…not to mention everyone else get mad at me because it can get them caught too
Basically i need a good camera to take snaps in low light classroom conditions (light lowerd to make board/slide at the front easy to see) without drawing to much attention to myself, but i cant afford to buy a phone just for that purpose. So it need to have “secretness” of a small phone but i dnt need any of the other stuff that a phone does …..like making calls lol Does such a device exist? its ok to have other features but i thikn that if its primary function is as a camera then most of the cost of it will be because of that allowing really good pics
I was thinking about the ipod which has a good camera and i have no feelings about Apple one or the other but its still quite expensive and the function is mostly an mp3 player, im sure for the price i could get a better camera only device.
Currently i have moto g phone with 5mp back camera which isnt good enough, the best pics taken ive seen by classmates are on the iphone 5s/6, lg g3 or S5. There also really quick to focus and take pics quickly which is important in just pulling out the camera, snapping a pic and putting it away quickly
All replies appreciated..thanks

I saw in an airport recently something called a spy pen, A 5MP camera in the shape of a pen and captures audio I think. Might be hard to aim but if left balanced on some books, etc it could be set up to shoot whenever you want.
I guess you need to Google this, since I just looked at it and never noticed the name.
Answer #2
thanks for the reply, but i think a spy pen is a litle to sophisticated…maybe even a bit gimmicky? i looked a “credit card size” cameras but the problem is they have a lens which projects outwards, obviously identifying it as a camera

” a litle to sophisticated…maybe even a bit gimmicky? ” are u kidding me?
a small device, that nodody will look twice at…even in your ear and ready to shoot anytime. if thats too much then perhaps you learn to write faster, cuz at about 50 euro it seemed to do what you wanted.. oh well.
Answer #4
calm down, i wasnt trying to insult you or your idea
I need to see what im snapping on the screen..so i can focus in and out if need be, but personally i feel a spy pen would be OTT for what i intend to use it for…i dont wan tto pay for teh “spy” aspect when i can get away with tech that is similar to a phone and probably better value as a result..
also im not taking a special airport trip just to visit the store
Peace out

ok, np, just trying to answer ur question
Answer #6
To be fair youre probably gonna have to get something “gimmicky” as that is what youre asking for, a small camera made not to look like a camera : \
Answer #7
Lol at the ~ censored ~ teacher not sharing the file anyway. Just ask the idiot with the 8 year old brain. Or get a camera and ask him to use it. You CAN do it anyway, only an idiot would prohibit it.
Edit: And MEGA-LOL at you accepting this situation. Why would he make the slides anyway if not for sharing. There is an easy way to grab them so you can use it. What, you are supposed to be in hardship to copy them lol.
Answer #8
I can understand if its in High School. But this is college. I can bring laptop… Be on my phone when ever I want. Take pictures or record the lectures. Bring tablet for easier later lectures review.
First time I heard that… Go talk to the professor. Telling them you would like to take pictures on the diagram/slides… Tell them it would help your in studying which it will. If still not allowed then go talk to your counselor. Your paying for your classes not on your knee begging.
Answer #9
Some refuse because they want students to “copy it down” because it helps us learn (thier thinking) and some do it because they have to follow copyright rules and use images pulled from the web with permission prohibiting them from distributing it..and some do it because thier just mean lol…but whatever the reason, if anyone has ever been to college knows, you have to accept it, its thier rules… end of story

My friends had a similar problem a few years ago.
They spoke to the tutor, sensibly, and told him that when they’re copying the diagram he’s still talking so they miss what he said – he has to either stop talking why they copy, provide printed diagrams, or let them photograph it and draw it out later on.
He was resistant at first but they debated the problem reasonable and without rancour – the end result was a compromise.
They were allowed to photograph it but NOT print it into any papers – he wanted to see the diagram hand drawn becasue he believed drawing it actually helped them take it in, remember it, absorb the diagram.
End result – it worked beautifully, photographed diagrams and then later hand drawn into the page (a few didn’t, they just printed it and glued it in, but he never found out and they passed the course anyway).
So:
Instead of being all secrecty-secret, why not go to him and tell him that you miss out on his words becasue you’re too busy doing the diagram?
He might even print them out as hand-outs..

I feel your pain. There’s no doubt that copying (and ideally annotating) diagrams certainly helps you learn, but the classroom isn’t always the best place to do it; I found myself re-writing my rough notes from class at home when I had more time and could look up things I wasn’t so clear on. Try explaining that to your professor.

I don’t know where you live or your resources.
But why not just buy a cheap older used phone that has a camera without service at a flea market or on ebay and use that.
Rather than trying to rethink it using other gadgetry.
I can easily find them here for $20 or less at flea markets and garage sales locally.
Or you can check ebay there’s tons of them:

The other option:
Buy a cheap older digital camera – I picked up a 2 Mp Fuji for £10, works very well. It’s about the size of a large box of matches, or small pack of cigarettes.
EASY to hold in one hand and still have hand-flesh to hide it, slips into a pencil case or book-bag or whatever you use.
No frills, makes a good image, certainly good enough to print an drawing from or to copy it from.

how about make a group in fb / whatsup for classes to share the pictures?
