Movies with subtitles

August 7th, 2016

I see a lot of MKV on here with muxed or embedded subtitles, but how to remove them?
Why you may ask well I am not hard of hearing and I do not need subtitles.
Also seeing it is MKV what I play them on does not support MKV so I convert it, so is it possible to remove them from the file?

Answer #1
You can’t remove embedded subtitles from video files.
You can only disable viewing subtitles with “Video and separate subtitle file”

A clear point thank you, Then I wonder do people think everyone is hard of hearing as they put subtitles on everything. I have seen subtitles separate from the file now they are forced in to the file not optional.
Answer #3
Try FormatFactory. It can convert to many formats and you can add or remove the subs.
You can even convert to AVI with embeded subs.

I think FormatFactory can add or remove sub. only when convert “Video and separate subtitle file” to another format but i think it can’t remove sub when convert “Video with Embedded sub.”

I don’t think it is because of any problem of hearing.
Sometimes subs are to another language so uploader “embedded sub. & convert video to another format as .mkv” by the same software to reduce file size then upload it faster.
Answer #5
If subs aren’t hardcoded they can be removed.
Use mkvtoolnix for that.
Open it – add – Select mkv file that has subs – now Under Track, Chapters and Tags Uncheck subs you don’t need – Start muxing – it is fast…..
Answer #6
Now this is clear and informative, many thank I will have to give this a try tomorrow.
Answer #7
If you convert to other formats like XviD/.avi, the muxed subs will automatically be lost, so you won’t have to worry about them any more.
Hard subs of course, can’t be removed.
If you want to see what a video file contains, use Mediainfo.
