MagicJack Serious discussion

September 3rd, 2013

Anyone own the Magic Jack thing they sell on TV kinda wanted to try it out and see if its worth getting or not.
If you have it or had it tell me what you think of it and would you recommend it?

I had one and it worked flawlessly. I have a cellphone, but no landline and the reception at home was terrible. So I got the magic jack. I discovered the it could also be used solely as a usb dongle to connect a standard telephone to your PC via USB and the phone could be used in other apps and programs that use usb phones. I stopped paying for the magic jack and now I use it with Google Voice. They have a feature that lets you make calls in your gmail and with the magic jack dongle I can even use a standard phone. The only problem with it is, unlike magic jack, the phone does not ring and you still have to answer it on the PC.
Sorry for rambling, but to answer your question it is worth it imo.

Yeah hands down the MagicJack is incredible. the new Plus one that came out is a bit more cost wise, however you can just use an Ethernet cable now and not require a PC to run it. Call quality is fantastic and you can use gaming headset or tele jack. Great to have if you travel. You can also have it call forward to another number which is handy.

I have also been looking into this. It was either this or Vonage. The reviews on MagicJack are mixed. Some positive and some negative. The negative reviews were mainly about the customer service and bad charges.

I used the original magic jack and the only 2 issues i had were my preferred area code was not available at the time (i know, not THAT important but it was a bother for family calling me) and i could not fax reliably over it (another non-issue for most as email has almost replaced faxing…)
Good call quality and the new Plus version is nice cause you dont have to worry about wife/hubby calling when you’re gaming and you dont need to leave the computer on sucking power all day.
$30 a year (or is it 20…) vs $30 a month…its no competition if you want basic voip with no customer service (never tried their CS but the site looks…horrible).
