LaCie 500gb Hard Drive Clicking Noise

August 6th, 2016

Hello, I Recently purchased a 500gb LaCie Hard Drive. It Arrived today, everything works out of the box except whenever I Read/Write Data I hear this annoying clicking noise it makes. The hard drive still works.
After searching on google I found a Video which can help explain the sounds.

Is this normal? I would Appreciate if anybody could give me some advice on what I should do.

When the Hard drive is idle it does not make the clicking sound. It makes those noises when reading/writing data
I have recorded the sounds.

The hard drive works fine. I just did a 20gb backup and it went through fine
I have also used windows to check for bad sectors and everything was good. Its just the clicking sound

i have a 320 gb one, doesn’t make any such noise..

If the drive is powered up, you should get a blue light on the front. When connected to either mac or pc ( porsches are MS_DOS formatted out the box ), if it does not mount or does not appear in DISK UTILTY, then it is a high probability that the enclosure/bridge board has failed and the drive ( if not making grinding, buzzing, clicking or beeping sounds) will have to be extracted and placed into a more stable enclosure. If the drive is grinding like you say, most likely the disk is physically damaged.
If this is something you experience often, maybe you should consider power conditioners. if the drive is being moved around alot, you should be gentle with it in transit. Drive enclosures, look rugged and have flashy lights and metal enclosures, but should be treated like babies. Drives are feircely sensitive. They should be padded, kept away from magnets, and treated like laptops.

Clicking noise from hard disk means imminent failure. You should copy all files away from it and return it for a replacement ASAP.
EDIT: If the sound is like in that video, it’s not a critical sound. But new drives should not be so loud. Old drives often sound like that and it’s normal. But I have a 500GB Lacie disk too and it’s pretty quiet, so you should ask for a replacement either way.

Thanks. I think the LaCie may have a 500gb 7200rpm IDE Hard Drive
I have called up three different technicians locally and they all tell me that a clicking sound coming from the hard drive means it is faulty. The Hard drive works but it will eventually fail.

Clicking or any loud noise is never good and as has pointed out, usually leads to the end of hardware. Send it back and get another mate, your best choice by far
