Is it worth to lower CPU fan speed while AFK?

August 16th, 2013

I am really curious as if it’s worth or not to use speed fan and set it to lower the speed fans (I assume it just lowers the CPU one, not sure if the PSU one as well) speeds while having the PC on and you being away from it.
In both cases the temeperature is OK so that goes out of discussion.
Normall the cpu’s fan would go from like 2000/1800 to something like under 1000 on the usage of speedfan.
Now is it worth to do it? Or it won’t help at all.

no its not the computer automatically does this it self
it sets it self to a speed that will cool the chips to reccommended temps and speedfan i dont like it much

It will depend on what parts your using, the operating conditions.
The CPU cooler is also designed to cool the surrounding mosfets, so you will kill them faster if you drop the speed or not cleaning it regularly.
You could always get one of those tower coolers which are fairly quiet and cool well, this will depend on your case.

Check your CPU fan speed using something like Everest or hardware monitor. There should be a setting in your Bios to enable automatic CPU fan speed control. Make sure that is enabled. If it was not, then check the fan speed while idling in windows after enabling it.
Unless the motherboard CPU fan control doesn’t really control the fan speed well and it is frequently high when the CPU temperature is quite low then I wouldn’t bother using Speedfan. I don’t like Speedfan either and don’t use it. I don’t trust software to control something as important as a CPU fan. That’s best done by hardware IMO.
Speedfan is unlikely to be able to control the PSU fan speed unless that is hooked up to the motherboard which is unlikely. Speedfan can only control certain motherboard fan headers on the motheboard.

Thanks for the answer. The Bios has a “Fan ” option which you set from like 4 profiles. But I noticed that the speed is static after setting that. I just decided to leave it like it is and not mess with that. Better that way as I doubt a few less RPM’s during a night will help that much the fan, besides it’s not that noisy or anything. Just thought it’d do it good Oh and I clean the fans often.
Thx again
