Is it really safe to download copyright content?

September 23rd, 2013

Just like title said. I’ve also been learning about computer security at my university, there’s so many ways to inject a bad binary or <script> to any files of any types. I don’t know all but with so many upload group who knows what could go wrong . Not that I have any problem with downloading warez, I think it’s great that the forum exists. Hopefully this topic won’t get deleted but will actually lead to some good discussions.

Sounds like MPAA/RIAA propaganda.

In short: It all depends on how and where you acquire the material.
In depth: Nothing is 100% certain, and given enough time the possibility for downloading malicious files increases. Your best bet is to play it safe with a decent anti-virus (Microsoft Security Essentials is free, updates quite often, and is actually pretty decent) and to have a little common sense about downloading files.. for instance: my rule of thumb for downloading from here is to avoid unfamiliar uploaders and/or people who only have a small number of posts.. reading the latest posts in the thread is also a good idea.
It’s also a good idea to avoid peer-to-peer protocol filesharing as it’s a risky way to go about downloading, and the risk for getting caught is definitely there, and is also more severe when it comes to fines and litigation since you’re also distributing the file (uploading).
Downloading – Civil crime where the only way for litigation is from the IP holder.
Uploading – Felony where if caught you run into some serious problems.

Cool. Thanks for that, I’ve never heard of this one before. Definitely gonna use this.
