Is FARONICS Deep Freeze any good?
January 30th, 2020
I already back up the HDD to an image file in case of complete hard-disk failure but I would also like to have a quick fix program like Deep freeze installed as well. It would save a lot of time not having to go through the process of re-installing the backup image & then having to re-install all the newer programs & files.
I am open to hearing about other programs of this type but please don’t tell me to use Windows System restore or RollBack because I have already tried both programs without too much success. RollBack killed one of my HDD’s & I actually hate System Restore so much that have it disabled on my drive.
Acronis TrueImage is good for a complete backup & restore but to be able to just reboot after something has gone wrong & have everything back to normal would be even better.
So if no one can give any advice on this program it must be Crap?

All Hope Is Gone
OK, I assume you are going to be using this on your personal PC laptop or W/e.
I dont think that using Deep freeze would be a great idea, basically what it does is save the state of the computer as you want it, it will then restore that EVERY time you turn your computer off, so nothing would have changed, not the registry not your wallpaper If you had a virus on there and removed it is probable it will still be there. I think Deep freeze is more suited to a Business, school or college etc. Installing Deep freeze would become annnoying I think.
Its upto you my friend, it seems to work well at my college.
I have it on my PC but have it turned off except when I want to try some dodgy software.
As a previous poster said it’s not suitable to use all the time because when you reboot everything you did in that session is lost. If you had it turned on and a virus got into system then when you reboot the virus is gone. You can even change or remove registry files and a reboot recovers everything. As far as I’m aware it does not slow down the PC. BTW, the program is NOT crap. Look at this link from Wikipediahttp://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=4&ved=0CBgQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FDeep_Freeze_(software)&ei=sUnmSuTZNJiI6gPAqsHrAQ&usg=AFQjCNELKSEmw6PidRJXhCoBwZpvc8idXw&sig2=CKcKbhDg_g-xHZEcIKDO6A
I think the program ROCKS. If you want to save files, then just get another hard drive and save them to that. Or partition your one hard drive so you have another hard drive that is NOT frozen. Also, the newest version has the ability to “freeze” only certain parts of your hard drive anyway, so you can still save your work to “unfrozen” drives.
Thanks, the version I have has none of those features.
I’ve not used Deep Freeze myself, but I run Windows Steadystate on most my family members computers. If it goes wrong you just roll it back basically. Sounds like something to do with what your saying anywho =P http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx
Not a huge consumption on resources. Just remembered aswell. ERUNT ;] Old skool backup and recovery utility. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
Just got to know how to run it if you need to recover, command line based. Have a read through the help file before using ;] Run as you want, so no slowing down your P.C.
Thank you all very much for the info, your advice has helped me come to a decision
Dude Deep freeze good software to install in your pc
Some advice:
1. Freeze c:\ partition ONLY where Windows lives. You need to protect windows.
2. Leave d:\ partition where you can save your files.
3. Install your games especially online games where you need to update/patch it constantly. Since its in d:\, deepfreeze will not touch it.
4. Install a decent antivirus. I use Kaspersky Internet Security combining with DeepFreeze since d: is vulnerable to viruses.
5. Deepfreeze currently does not work in Windows 7. You will get BSOD (Blue screen of death). It only supports XP and Vista at the moment.
6. That’s all. Good luck.

I’ve been using deep freeze standard version for a while, been very useful for me and for all other computers for my family. However there only downside and major warnings to be aware for proper use of this. The downside is it will not allow you to have your computer in hibernation. The major warning is, DO NOT SET ANY WINDOWS UPDATE TO AUTOUPDATE or any applications on autoupdate while in frozen state. If you do so, some updates require a restart of your system in order to install the updates…so when in frozen state and you reboot for a required update installation, YOU WILL BE STUCK IN THAT REBOOT UPDATE SESSION FOREVER!! YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET INTO WINDOWS O.S. TO FIX IT OR DISABLE DEEP FREEZE. ONLY SOLUTION OUT OF THIS ORDEAL WILL BE TO REFORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE AND REINSTALL YOUR O.S. ALL OVER AGAIN, AND YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE ON YOUR PC. So remember, before you do any software or windows update, thaw (disable frozen state) all future reboots in deep freeze, reboot, then update your system/applications as needed, and then reboot a few more times in order to check that all required reboot updates have completed. Finally, when everything is complete and safe (normal boot) state, enable your deep freeze again.
