Installin ubuntu, just getting command prompt no desktop

August 16th, 2013

Not sure if I did anything wrong. But I managed to put a 20 G partition on my old computer(amd athelon 2.3GHz with 1 G Ram) full HDrive-160. When I installed ubuntu onto the new partition I was expecting a desktop like windows. But all I get is a command prompt line with my username@ubuntu>.
I know this is for scripting but don’t want to do that and I would like the desktop
any help
thanx

Which Ubuntu version did you get? After installing Ubuntu and boot, this is the screen you should get:

This is for version 11.10.

Answer #3
I’m thinking when it asked me to install the grub loader, I said yes. that might have been the problem

Answer #4
To be honest I don’t know, but I don’t think so. I’ve installed Ubuntu with grub to run it aside with Windows 7 and didn’t have that issue.
You can get a much better and accurate answer if you ask support on Ubuntu Forums:
