There are a ton of ebooks here + a lot of forums for professional chess; look/ask @ 2+2 for guidance also. Join a local club and also check some yt videos from these users:

EDIT: Also, google for “chess problems” and try those. Eventually, you’ll get better… hopefully.

I’ve been playing chess since I was 8 years old and off the top my head here’s how you properly learn to play the game:
First, learn the rules of moving the pieces:
The pieces (in order of importance)
Back Row:
King (one piece) – moves only 1 space in any direction and capture opponent’s pieces only that way. The most important piece because if the King is killed, the game is over.
Queen: (one piece) – moves unlimited spaces in any direction and can capture opponent’s pieces that way. It’s the most powerful piece.
Rook (two pieces) – moves unlimited spaces but only vertically and horizontally and can capture opponent’s pieces only that way
Bishop (two pieces) – moves unlimited spaces but only diagonally on one color, the color it was on when the game starts and can capture opponent’s pieces only that way
Knight (two pieces) – moves in an L-shape – one space to the side and two spaces up or two spaces to the side and one space up and it’s the only piece that can jump over other pieces and and can capture opponent’s pieces only that way.
Front Row
Pawn: (eight pieces) – moves forward one space at a time
The first move can move two spaces
Captures opponent’s pieces one space diagonally only.
Can also capture an opponent’s piece “En passant”, that is in the first move if an opponent’s piece is two spaces in front and one space to the side of you pawn it can capture that piece
If the pawn reaches the the final eighth space (rank) on the opponents side of the board, it gets promoted to any piece you want (usually a Queen). This rarely happens and only with beginners.
The object of the game is to trap the King – called Checkmate – get it trapped in a position so that anywhere it moves it is captured.
When a King is threatened with capture but can escape, it is called Check.
If the King is threatened and escapes to the same positions three times in a row, the game is a draw.
When it is hopeless and you have no chance of winning, you tip the King over and concede the game instead of wasting your opponent’s time. This is chess etiquette.
The suggested way to start learning the game is by playing and practicing until you master the way the pieces move. Until you master that, always start with this opening: First move: King’s pawn forward two spaces, Second move: King’s Bishop diagonally three spaces, then take it from there and develope your pieces to threaten your opponent’s pieces, experment with different moves and whatnot.
After you mastered the way the pieces move, you learn the various opening games such as the Ruy Lopez, the Italian Game, Sicilian Defense, Queen’s Gambit, etc. to begin developing your pieces to the best advantage.
After you mastered opening games, you learn the middle games. That’s where skill comes in, learning how to position your pieces to gain the advantage and capture your opponents pieces.
Finally, you learn the end games when you and your opponent are left with only a few pieces such as Queen vs two Rooks, Bishop versus knight with pawn(s), Rook and pawn endings, etc.
That’s it in a nutshell. It takes years of practice to become a good chess player.
I bet you now you’re thinking, hell no I ain’t learning this game, it’s too complicated!
