I have a problem with a 20 watt amplifier.

July 28th, 2013

I had purchased a 20 watt amplifier that I have connected to 2 Polk Audio speakers. When I turn the volume knob past a certain point I get a constant clicking sound.
Answer #1
clicking via speakers or from the amp itself ?
Answer #2
The clicking is from the amplifier. The speakers require at least 20-100 watts of power. As I mentioned above the amplifier is 20 watts.
Answer #3
i thinks the amplifier at fault i would bring it back and get a refund back or a exchanged
Answer #4
Dude, 20W is not much at all, And your speakers are capable to a lot more than that.
I don’t know what was going thru your mind when you bought it to be honest. You can hardly
hear music full blast with a lousy 20W Try getting a refund, Hope you didn’t pay too much for it.

I seriously doubt he got it from the store, It’s more likely second hand, I mean c’mon, 20W? Were talking about an actual amp here (not computer related) and it’s likely old as hell! Getting the seller to refund would not be an easy task.
Answer #5
I bought the amplifier from Amazon for $25 at the end of last year so its pretty much a paperweight now. The reason I bought it is because of the good reviews that it received. I would’ve been better off buying a Sherwood receiver for $100 from Radioshack. I had purchased a pair of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers for $200 and rushed to buy the amplifier. This was a lesson learned.

Underdriving your speakers is a fast way to blow them. With a lack of power you are tempted to keep turning up the volume until you clip the amp and send square wave to your speakers.
Good rule of thumb is have your amp rated at 2X your speaker’s rating.
200W amp -> 100W speakers
You will never need to turn the amp all the way up and your speakers will distort and complain long before you damage them if you are pushing it too hard.
