hp pavilion 500 “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed”

January 28th, 2020

“No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed” Is the message I keep getting. Press power the hard drive kinda “spins” or beeps twice and then nothing this message pops up. Could get to bios did every single troubleshooting google could conjure. I ran the diagnostics test memory came back fine but the hard drive did not pass. Wasn’t even registered. I think it died bc recently for about a month or so I had huge disk usage on task manager. I’d tap my pc it would stop. I am constantly downloading search and my pc is on 24/7 I think it died.
I went to best buy bought a new hard drive. Same brand just different size. Popped it in and get the same message. “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed” I ran the diag test I had ran before and the disk shows up in bios passes all test. Just still get that message.
My question is I have a usb that I used to make a bootable version of my windows. Is it giving me this error bc its a fresh hd and nothing is on it, and I’d just have to bios w.e and boot from usb then it will install hard drive. Never installed a hard drive. I thought it would pop up all fresh and ask me to install windows. not give me the same “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed”. Ive done everything reseat everything all wires the battery the ram. Any help appreciated. Idk if I have to do something special whilst installing new hd or If I just pop it in and boot from usb. Thanks!

To sum it up quickly in between adds.. More or less the old HD probably has died.. There is programs to check it, and better to do with a second HD.. As for the new one, you have to install windows or another os on it to start with.. Use a cd or usb to install an operating system, until then no bootable disk will be detected.. (Actually once you put in an install disk one will be detected.. If it isnt, you have to change bios boot order to make sure the either usb or cd is within the boot order..)
Edit: As my last bit says, as long as you have made the usb bootable installation correctly, you should be able to just plug it in and it will boot and install windows. If it dont first thing to check is within bios to ensure the usb is within the boot order (with older comps it sometimes aint). Second thing to check is to make sure you made the bootable OS correctly.. If the new HD can be seen in BIOS you have installed it correctly, and now just have to do the OS install…

I have a usb that I used to make a bootable version of my windows.
get that to boot without the harddrive 1st, to be sure it works
then shutdown, install the new drive and reboot
F9 is the “boot menu” key, the USB drive show up if you hit F9 at boot up

Try using Hirens Boot CD if you have it. Make sure BIOS boots from CD first to use it. If it shows up in DOS you can format it and set it to active, then reboot using OS CD or USB and install the OS.
Have you tried a different power cable from the PSU to hard disk and a different SATA data cable from the motherboard to the hard disk? Also, try a different SATA port on the hard disk.
With the old HD you could try wrapping it in a plastic bag and putting it in the freezer overnight then putting it back in your PC to see if it works. The freezer bit helps to loosen the read head and any other internal bits that might be stuck (this doesn’t always work but it’s worth a try).
