Answer #1
Don’t you have a recovery partition or something. If you don’t then just format your HDD and partition it the way you want. Then use the XP disk and the serial for your computer and install it. If you don’t know what the serial is just get “Magical Jellybean” and it will tell you what your serial is. After that install everything you need. First of all don’t forget to download the drivers for your PC and back them up on a disk or something. Here’s Magical Jellybean Keyfinder:

Good luck mate ^_^
Answer #2
you cant BUY a BRAND NAME computer without a recovery disc or OS disc.. IT IS ILLEGAL to sell a computer without one.. you can ask the place where you bought your comp from.. if they refuse tell them to screw themselves and take them to small claims court…
if its a custom computer well then, and you PAID for the OS then they should give you the OS CD coz IF IT IS LEGAL then theres only 1 key for that copy.. otherwise its prolly not legal and gave you a corporate version or something
Answer #3
if you still have your cd key then you could download windows and use your own key to make it valid
Answer #4
you would have to make sure you download the correct windows version if you do download it.
what computer manufacturer are we talking about here anyway? (and who/where did you buy it from)
Answer #5
its a sony vaio and my cuz gav it 2 me but he cant find da recovery disk (it is 100percent legal btw) i have 2 HD in my PC and one is for recovery
ty
Answer #6
Keep your CDs in check mate, you never know when they might come in handy. Anyway, even if you download the same XP version from here and use your original serial you would be easily able to restore your computer to factory condition (pretty much). Good luck mate ^_^
Answer #7
My old packard bell pc had the recovery thing all built in, when i started the pc i could press F11 and it would let me re-format the whole pc, or just the programmes and that clear it up and make it run faster, You could check if your laptop does anything like that?
Answer #8
When I bought my old computer it didn’t have a disk for the OS with it. It had a crappy recovery partition that got screwed and wouldn’t work after I formated my other partition.
Your best bet mate is to download the same version of Xp from the appz section of and when you install it just put in your serial instead of cracking it. That’s if you wanna go real legit. I don’t see the point since you already own the software anyway.
You can find the serial on a sticker on the back or the side of the computer.
See ya mate!
Answer #9

Answer #10
If it’s yours and you don’t want to go through the trouble of reformatting, why not just uninstall the stuff you don’t want or need?
Answer #11

ty
Answer #14
Make sure you get all the correct drivers first and save them all to install later (and I mean all the drivers for your system, including LAN and chipset). Also make sure you have the original CD-Key written somewhere. If you don’t know it use Magical Jellybean keyfinder like I posted above. After that burn the XP CD and boot from it (set the first boot device in the BIOS to be the CD/DVD-ROM). After that just format your HDD and install Windows to it. Good luck mate ^_^
Answer #15

Answer #17
basically what you do is make sure your copy of xp works from bootable. to do this:
have all your stuff BACKED UP – incl emails, contacts, work, game saves, drivers
turn off your computer, turn it on again and enter bios settings, rearrange the boot order so that your dvd/cd player is first to boot – this should be under a heading called “boot sequence/order”
open your cd drive and put the cd in, exit bios and it should restart.
if the cd boots and you have all your stuff BACKED UP your good to go, if not exit setup, reset ur boot sequence to hdd and backup.
NOW:
in xp setup it will ask you where you want to install XP, it will scan your HDD and show you your partitions, giving you the option to make new partitions or format hdd.
Select the option to format that hdd partition and install it clean.
xp will then get under way formatting it and installing the os
^^ the above was written from memory, and for speed ive mixed bits of vista in to my explanation – in your case youll probably have an unfriendly looking interface but just read through the instructions on screen.

Actually I went in ad bought a laptop pretty recently. I aksed if it came with the recovery disk, (just a habit to make sure everything is in check). I expected a straight quick answer “yes.” instead I got a hmmm.. I dont know let me check. He checked and it did, but I asked why he had to check, shouldnt they all come with one? He told me they were starting to phase out giving recovery disks. Beats the hell out of me why they would do that. This was best buy…
By the way.. if it wasnt an absolute urgency for a computer, don’t buy one at best buy. I fried the old motherboard on my previous laptop…
Answer #19
Actually, DELL ([sarcasm]those bright sparks [/sarcasm]) started phasing out additional disks on their pc shipments around 3 years ago, when i bought this pc.
i don’t know how well it went and how much they still do it, but my pc didnt have any discs.
I had dell utilities already installed on the pc, and there is a small (around 3gig) partition on my hdd with more dell utilities on it.

Answer #22
so wen it finsihes installing, i will have my pc “brand new?”
Answer #23
avoid multiposting, ull get in trouble.
you will have your pc as good as new as can be – it will still be as good as when you bought it terms of components (a few years wont physically damage your components (part from dust/humidity maybe)).
Running wise – your hard drive will be blank – copy over your backed up data however you need, thats however you did it over your end.
It will be fast but what im trying to say is dont expect the quickness to last too long – install only what you need.

Alex_ > Are you referring to install a retail version of the Windows XP Professional Operating System?
manny > yes

Answer #32
Um, im guessing you either tried what i suggested and it didnt work, or you didnt try :S
Either way, Do you see “VAIO Recovery Wizard” on your computer?
AND, i made some personal headway with the earlier concern about whether to use OEM or standalone XP..
I saw that there was license infomation for oem sony on the cracks i had – only theyre for Vista..
If you feel like deleting everything on this godforsaken computer and running vista basic, i can help you.
Answer #33
nah i wanna stick with xp on my deskstop (got vista on my laptop) thing is sony sed it is not possible to use the CD key to install a retail version of the Operating System. n deres no VAIO Recovery Wizard (i guess my cuz messed wit it)

Answer #34
Sony are right in saying you cant use your key with any old windows download, retail windows have a different format of key to oem versions or licenses.
im trying to find what you can use, post back in a bit.
—edit—
i really despise sonys need to venture into the computer market Ive looked on google for more specific sony information, all i get is complaints about Sony.
One person did post THIS:
You can access the recovery partition without disks. When you boot up, you get the Sony screen. At that point, press and hold the F10 key until it either starts up the recovery wizard or starts beeping. It will take you directly to the recovery partition and allow you to install everything.

http://www.driverheaven.net/laptop-notebook-general-technical-forum/103499-please-help-vaio.html
Are you in the UK, if not this wont work for you as i describe – go to the right sony country site, but essentially the same:
Go to this Sony site:
http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/submenu/downloads.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons
Click on the second link:
Preinstalled Drivers and Utilities
Enter your laptop model in the boxes, click “i cant find my model” link underneath the three boxes if you cant find it.
On the page that loads, you should see something like this:
Image
Select/download all the “Original Utilities Packages” that are available and install them – one of those should give you the tools to reinstall your os to original state.
I know this is alot, and if your bored think about how bored i am of this now
Please tell my your laptop model too (and where the laptop was bought from)

dude stop multipostin, gnna get screwd for it lol – pm me to remind me to look at this thread
im finding what you need with the computer make you gave me.
that link you posted is what you need after you have cleaned XP, not yet.
—edit—
Hmm, Sony want you to purchase a new set of recovery disks should you lose them.
If your computer does not have the ability to create the discs or if you are unable to locate the original restore discs that shipped with some VAIO computers, contact Sony at 800-488-SONY (7669) or visit the Sony Online Support Web site (http://www.sony.com/pcsupport) to purchase a set of system restore CDs or DVDs.
Sony (crap that they are) have dead links to where you need to go to buy the restore cds (that link above)
Its up to you whether you wanna call them, theres this website which apparently sells these recovery CDs:
http://www.sonyrecovery.com/
go there, on the right is a drop down box where you select the model of your pc.. its $34.00 there.
I suggest you find out whether your cousin still has those CDs somewhere, if not call sony, if they cant help, or want more than $34, go with this sonyrecovery link.. i cant find an upload of the disks anywhere yet, but im still looking.
Is there really nothing you can see on Windows to create a restore CD? look in your program files (in C: drive), look under system tools/accessories in all programs (on start menu)
Try and get to this location:
c:\program files\Sony\Vaio Recovery utility\
is anything there?
Restart your computer and press F10, alot of people say you can access the partition by pressing that as your computer starts up.
Please post answers to all the suggestions i have given, as it will give me a better idea of what you can do.
