November 12th, 2013

i have just found at my house 2 1TB Western Digital SATA Hard Drive i have a hdd usb enclosure so i put the hdd in it plugged it in and nothing happened with both
so how to know it they still work?

Answer #1
Could be the enclosure is not doing the job…
2 ways how you determine the HD had it’s day…
When you power it up…
1- It’s not spinning..
2- you hear the HD head making a clicking noise..

Could be the enclosure (and/or power supply if it has one), could be the connecting cable, could be the drives.
You can put a known working HDD in the enclosure to eliminate that.
Answer #4
Or you can instal the hard drive directly to a spare SATA connection in the PC to test it..
Answer #5
Most likely the enclosure,Unlike motherboards,Enclosures only supports up to a specific capacity,It probably just doesn’t support 1TB.

In all my years of using SATA external drives/enclosures, I have yet to come across one that won’t take a 1TB drive as standard. It’s usually only when you go above that size that you may run into problems.

Maybe you just got lucky,There are certainly enclosures that don’t support 1TB (tho less common these days) but we don’t know
how dated this enclosure is or it’s exact model so this can’t be fully ruled out as of yet,Set that aside,I’d say it’s more likely that the enclosure
is faulty then both of the HDDs in question,But of course anything is possible and we don’t have enough information at the moment. His story is kinda strange to be honest.

That just doesn’t sound right,What do you mean “found”? Where? I’ve never heard of anyone just “finding” HDDs out of nowhere,Normally
one would know he has em.

Guess it’s not the enclosure then,You could check online (by the S/N on the brand’s site) if they’re still under warranty.
I still find this story hard to believe tho,This is the first time I hear about someone forgetting he has X HDDs,Quite a crazy
story really,HDDs are usually actively used (On a PC,Nas etc) and are not just something you keep in your closet.
