How do I put a password on a rar file?

Very easy.
Once you have archived the file then click on advanced tab at the top and click on set password.
Then your are all done hopefully.

what i mean is, that i want the password thing to pop up before you can even see whats inside the archive

If you fear the name of the files can be obvious then I suggest adding a encrypted archive in a encrypted archive . if you wanna protect the file names too there is a option in WinRAR called “crypt Filenames” you can find in WinRAR -> 2nd tab -> set password and click the “crypt Filenames”
and no1 will every know what is in the RAR file
