How do I go higher than 1280 x 1024 in games?

July 6th, 2019

Right, this is probably the most stupid question of the week, but I just cant seem to get higher resolution in games. Far as Im aware it’s pretty normal nowadays to be running games at high res, like 1920 x 1080, and my HD4870 and the moniter can go up to 1920 x 1080
The highest resolution I can set (in a game menu), is 1280 x 1024, I know you can go higher than that lol, but there doesn’t seem to be an option in any of the games I play!
These are the games I’ve tried: Fallout 3, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Resident Evil 5, Prototype, Assassins Creed, Saboteur, Condemned, FEAR 2, Burnout Paradise, Witcher, and some others (all seem to max at 1280×1024)
I must be just missing something, like maybe you have to set the res in your GFX driver instead of the game, if you want to go higher than 1280?
My monitors maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080 (according to ATI CCC)
peace, thanks in advance

I assume you already tried reinstalling/updating the video drivers?

Sorry, my graphics drivers lying to me. It say my monitors max resolution is 1920×1080, but I’ve found out its actually 1280×1024!
Why is it even giving me the option to go higher than possible!? thats a bit dodgy

if you realy want to upscale the res, then perhaps try doing it yourself in the config files, sometimes found in eather My Documents, or in the game DIR, thou not all games can do this, but its worth a try ^^

if you monitors max resolution is 1920×1080, and your gpu’s res won’t go any higher than 1280×1024.. you have to update your video card drivers.
Answer #5
Select widescreen view in the game’s video options.

What is your gfx card? Are you sure your graphics card is capable of 1920×1080?
Answer #9
No lol, my monitors maximum resolution is 1280×1024, but for some reason, Catalyst Control Center says my monitor can go up to a max of 1920×1080!
My monitor: HP L1750 (the one with the robot arm for a screen mount LOL) [max res is 1280×1024]
My GFX card: Radeon HD4870 1GB GDDR5 [max res is 1920×1080]
I was just confused from the start because my GFX driver says my MONITORS max res is the same as my graphics card! Now I’ve made everybody just as confused as me.
I think its kind of crap that the programmers at ATI, after all these years of service, still haven’t implemented some kind of limit indication that stops you from choosing a res that will practically put your screen to sleep forever. I have “show monitors maximum resolution” ticked, so you would think thats what it would do LOL!

No its a glitch, these things happen all the time. Athough I never got this issue. If you do programming you know that it is impossible that your source code is perfect. You can only make it up to a certain level.

If your monitor can only go to X but you’re given the option of Y, sometimes you’ll get an out of range problem or sometimes you may get an extended Desktop, where if you drag to the end of the screen your cursor will carry on (it’s annoying but it may be of some use to each other)
