Yeah if your computer is like 10 years old.
No modern computers/network equipment require crossover cabling. Auto MDIX is standard on all network controllers nowadays.
Answer #7
No, you do need it, unless you have a HUB between them, you can’t just connect two computers by regular LAN cable. At least on all computers I have used at work, and they are newer than 10 years.

No, you do need it, unless you have a HUB between them, you can't just connect two computers by regular LAN cable. At least on all computers I have used at work, and they are newer than 10 years.I do this every day as well. I don’t remember the last time I ever needed a crossover cable. Also, I don’t remember the last time I used a hub. I didn’t think anyone used hubs anymore.
Answer #9
Well in that case, it’s just best to try first If it works directly it’s good, if not, you will need a hub or crossover.
Answer #10
Hubs are extremely old school. Use switches.
Answer #11
no need any hub or switches between two PC connect via LAN. ready made LAN wire with punching available in store. just buy it and connect two PC easily.
Answer #12
or you could use a special usb cable
Answer #13
Or firewire that’s why there is the “1394 connection” in your network devices, not many people use it, but that’s why it’s there.
Answer #14
Trouble with using the crossover network cable directly between 2 PCs is the you then have nowhere to connect your modem for internet or whatever.Which is why you normally connect with switches and routers.
Using 1324 (firewire) as Squirrel says could be an alternative..

This.
I do it on a regular basis, but if you have an ethernet router, just configure a network.

Wow I can’t believe I never knew about this. I’ve just been transferring to a USB drive back and forth.
