hard drive to USB 3.0 or thunderbolt?
July 25th, 2016
I have an INTERNAL HARD DRIVE. What I want to know is…… If I buy a USB 3.0 ENCLOSURE and place my HDD inside it; Will it be USB 3.0 speeds in transfer and read? Same for THUNDERBOLT?
Thanks.
USB 3 Is actually quicker than thunderbolt on test’s plus it’s cheaper. http://nofilmschool.com/2013/05/macworld-benchmark-battle-usb-3-vs-thunderbolt/
I see… Nice. But my question still stands… An ENCLOSURE that is USB 3.0 will make the HDD i put inside, any HDD, use those speeds?
it will only transfer between the enclosure and your pc at usb 3.0 speeds providing it is connected to a usb 3.0 port. it wont affect the speed of the hdd, that will only transfer at its rated speed to the enclosure. a sata 1 hdd will transfer at sata 1 speeds and the usb 3.0 interface will be waiting for data from the hdd.
using a usb 3.0 enclosure is not going to speed up the hdd.
Nobody really uses thunderbolt… The speeds would only be affected assuming that the usb 3.0 is limiting the read/write speed of the HDD.
If your HDD is slow, it wont matter what connection you are using
Yes, use USB3, it should normally give the best speed that your drive is capable of..
However if your drive and your motherboard are both SATA3(6GB), then a slightly better overall performance would be obtained using e-Sata..
