if i buy Halo 2 , do i still need to buy live service to play online????

No you do not need XBL(xbox live) to play Halo 2 online, you can use XBC(xbox connect) or Xlink Kai. Both do require a router to use, I prefer Xlink Kai but a lot of people will be on XBC.
unless you meant for PC then disregard this post.

I use Xbox Live to play Halo 2. Never used the other alternatives though
