Free up space for update

August 5th, 2016

Hi guys,
I m running win 8.1 on a tablet. was trying to run the windows 10 update from microsoft website. When installing it says you need 8 gb of free space.
I did a clean recovery and starred with 5.6 free gb
Then followed this guide
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/GuideToFreeingUpDiskSpaceUnderWindows81.aspx
-No system restore points
-I disabled virtual memory and free up to 1.5 gb so now up to 7.1 gb free space. Can I delete anything elde so I could reach 8gb?

Something weird going on here ?
It would seem that I just lost some of the replies to this topic, starting with one from ?
And the coded stuff in ‘s post is missing..
Anyhow was just going to mention that there should not be anything in the System Volume Information Folder in you don’t have System Restore points.
You can use WinDirStat to see what is using space on your drives.

You could also try Ubuntu with the new Unity 8 desktop (made to run on all types of devices), it looks really well, the installation shouldn’t take more than 4GB:

With that I mean files like tiles, intro, visibility, email app, weather icons, etc… Could I move these and free up to 8 gb so I can starr the update?
EDIT:
Thanks guys, but I want to sell this tablet therefore install the win 10 update… I ll give windir a try, but looks like i won’t succeed.
@Jack_Torrance: I downloaded linux Mint for my own laptop. Any remarks to mint vs ubuntu (from your view)?

I added the link to the code tags.
I did a clean recovery, therefore no restore points (before the recovery “system restore points” were disabled).
I ll give windirsat a try.
Where is system volume information folder located at?
Answer #5
Try turning off system restore.. It allocates so much space, and even if its not used, the space will be seen as taken/used… Usually takes up GB’s of space..
ReReading your latest post guess that wont help?? Check it any way, as I said if you have allocated hard drive space to restore points, the space will be taken up on the drive, even if you have no restore points…
Other then that, you should be able to install win 10 on a 16gb drive. If you are selling it maybe do an upgrade and clean install (format)… That will get rid of all your info on the com as well as fit the new os..
Answer #6
Thanks, yeah it was disabled.
Probably a clean install will do…
Answer #7
Ran windirstat and it showed hibernate.sys for a full 700 megs. Disabled this and freed up to 8.x gb. Install is now active. Thanks.
Answer #8
Arr…The dreaded hibernate.sys …. a trap for players young and old
BTW to see files like hibernate.sys and pagefile.sys (another big memory user) and System Volume Information, You can go to Tools> Folder Options > View and untick ‘Hide protected operating system files’.
Best to put the tick back when you are finished though. I always set things up to view hidden files and not hide file extensions however.
Answer #9
It got deleted by disabling the feature via cmd. Thanks for the tip about the hidden system files. Cheers.
Answer #10
If you really want to save space, disable hibernate, disable “swap file” and disable system restore.
Also, clear temp files etc with windows disk cleaner or CCLeaner.
