i use FF portable and in its cache folder, FF creates so many folders and i just deleted over 3000 empty folders ! this makes the system so slow. what should i do ?
Answer #1
There are 243 folders in my firefox cache folder. If you are on windows, you can make it write protected by these steps:
1. Open My Computer. Then Open Tools Menu-> Folder Options -> View Tab-> Uncheck Use simple file sharing
2. Now delete all files and folders in Cache folder and make sure Firefox is not running.
3. Right click on Cache folder-> Properties-> Security tab-> Advanced
4. For every item having “Allow” in Type, select item and click Edit. Check Create and Write related options in Deny column.
If it causes any problem, remove newly created security settings.
Answer #2
Folders or files wont make your computer any faster or slower.

Agree with the above,Your worrying too much.
Btw you can clear the cache from FF itself (tools>clear recent history)
and also you can limit the cache size from tools>options>advanced>network so it wouldn’t use too much space.
Answer #4
then why 3000 empty folders were created ?
Answer #5
there might be one reason why it’s making a lot of folder is because you are using a portable version
why are you using a portable one for anyways?

I also have portable version, but it creates only 243 folders. 17 folders are empty.

Ask the Mozilla team
Could be a bug,Try updating it.
I haven’t cleared the cache on mine for 5 days now,Just checked and there are 4063 folders in there (with lots of files too of course).
It’s probably related to the way they’re organized. But as said,It doesn’t slow anything down,Just clear
your cache every once a while,If it really bothers you,You could disable caching completely by typing
about:config in the address bar then search for browser.cache.disk.enable and set it to false,But
this may cause a slight performance hit.

Are you referring to the \Data\profile\Cache folder? That’s what the OP is talking about.
When was the last time you cleared the cache?

I’m sure he has his reasons,For instance,He could be syncing it with his flash drive It’s very handy to have your favorites and such
on the go,But the portable version is useful regardless,It’s just more convenient as it keeps it all in one place,Making backups easier.

Mozilla implemented this with Firefox version 4. The multiple directory/object structure makes accessing cache a lot faster than it was before. Other apps do it too like Squid etc.

I’ve had this bug before after clearing my cache, you have to go to Tools > Clear Recent Histoy > Everything, I am not sure if it will work for you but it worked for me.
