Email client like thunderbird that actually works?
August 8th, 2016
Does anyone know any easy to use email clients?
Thunderbird is advertised as ‘easy to set up’ but my email account fails to add everytime i try.
Are all email clients as crap as that?
If so, i’ts less of a headache not using them.
thanks
LOL, You don’t know how to correctly configure your email account and your blaming TB? Seriously?
You are clearly doing something wrong! Which email provider is it exactly? POP3 or IMAP?
To be fair, Thunderbird rants on about how great it’s automatic configuration tool is….
I’ve no idea if my email are pop, i just sign in and read them, thats all i know.
I use outlook (used to be windows hotmail) i also have my yahoo being sent to my outlook.
I wanted t use a client like thunderbird becasue im tired of getting so much junk mail. i want to block the senders.
For some reason there is no ‘block sender’ option in yahoo or outlook.
I’ve tried thunderbird, seamonkey, opera, and others, but ive not managed to add my email account to any of them.
I thought it would be a simple case off: add email address, add password, and done.
Clearly not.
They seem too much hassle if you ask me.
Actually, You CAN manage blocked senders on outlook from their site!
Click on the configuration button (wheel) on the top right corner, The on “more mail settings” and “safe and blocked senders”, The rest is obvious. Also, You could create new folders on your Inbox (I.E Friends/Work/Family) and set filters so messages received from a particular group of people would go into the proper folder (Just click on “rules for sorting new messages” on the settings page) but the best way to avoid spam is to have 2 separate accounts, One personal (Only for people you know and trust) and another for registering on various sites. Also, You should avoid posting your email address in public as it can lead to excessive spam.
Back to the original subject, The required server settings is listed on this page:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/outlook/send-receive-from-app
You’ll have to click on the last option in order to see it (apps that support pop3 or smtp) If you’re still not sure how to configure it, I could help you remotely via Teamviewer if you want (Just PM me the info) Good luck!
Thanks for that.
I was using the windows 8 metro version and couldnt find that option there.
Now that i can use outlook properly, is there any real reason id need to use thunderbird anyway?
It still seems a tad confusing to set up, and im not sure it will be any better than my current system, now that im able to block senders.
Thanks
Well, Using an email client is more convenient than doing it manually.
I suggest you try it for a few days and see if you like it! Also, TB has a portable version as well:
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable
So you could put it on a flash drive and carry it with you to places.
But just so you know, By default settings, When using POP3, The messages are deleted
from the server once downloaded, So make sure you uncheck this option on TB if you wanna
keep em online too. IMAP is much better with this as not only messages are NOT automatically
deleted once downloaded, But you get 2-way access too (I mean that the client get’s access not only to the downloaded messages, But to the online stored ones as well, So you could manage em in separate from one place) but unfortunately, Outlook doesn’t offer this service (But Gmail/AOL/Lavabit do)
Thanks
As I have all my emails being redirected to my outlookmail, i dont think i have any use for TB still.
Unless im missing something, i dont see the point in using it? Especially as it has to be tweaked to get running.
I’m not sure i see the point in it at all.
All my mails are going to one place anyway. Whats the benefit of TB?
You don’t see the benefit in running an app that will automatically get you access to your email account vs manually going to their website and logging in? Plus, You’ll be able to open/find old messages much quicker as they’ll be stored locally. Composing new messages would be quicker too. And also, TB has plenty of addons, So you could customize it to your liking and make things easier.
Thunderbird is perfect (for me at least). I’ve been using it for years. It takes all my email accounts (around 20 in all) and I’ve never had any problem with it.
As Roberto says ………… YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!!
“YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!!”
It didn’t configure automatically (like it claims to be able to do) and i could not be bothered to go through it manually with a fine toothed comb trying to figure out the issue.
I was just asking if there is a simple program that works off the bat. If not, i was going to stick with my usual email method.
Every time i’ve downloaded these kinds of programs in the past, i’ve never managed to get them working, so i just go back to my usual, wait a year or so, then download them again to see if these programs will just install, and work without the need for configuring.
Anyway, I’m still not convinced its much better than my current system, now that i know how to block emails.
Yes, TB does seem to have a few Small advantages.. offline browsing, which i don’t see being used very much.
And will i have to configure it differently for every email i add? will i have to configure it for every device i install it on?
Sounds way to much hassle for not much more improvement.
Thanks though.
i’ll download the portable version and see how i get on with it.
It couldn’t be easier to add an email account to Thunderbird ………..
From the menu at the top ……….
Tools/Account Settings/Account Actions/Add Mail Account
Then you get this:
Now, how difficult is that???????????????????
The password is your email account password for example your password for: @gmail.com
Without any more input it should download your inbox and your spam just by clicking on the Thunderbird icon on your desktop. If you add more accounts with one click on the desktop icon the emails from all your accounts will be downloaded into Thunderbird.
As for offline viewing, I’ve never used it.
I tried to add my outlook mail to it and it wont work.
Needs configuring.
If it was as easy as you said, even i could manage it.

I’m assuming you have tried the import feature.
Outlook used to be Hotmail and you can still use a hotmail email name, perhaps there is some confusion there. I have 3 Hotmail accounts in Thunderbird that still download all emails from the @hotmail.com and @live.co.uk accounts.
I just tried to add my account as you first showed me.
It doesnt work.
I dont know any of the technical stuff beyond that.
It needs configuring, in what way, i dont know.
I’ve been given a few pointers but im pretty lost with it.
as i said, its just not simple. I dont see the point in all the extra hassle for such small benefit?
Thanks for the input
p.s.. i cant add it as a hotmail name, as its a new outlook one, i had to use it with my ‘great’ new windows 8 set up…

Apparently it doesn’t work on the Metro interface of Windows 8, only on the Desktop.
Shame you can’t get it to work for you cos it’s a good application.
Well, i use metro, but also of course, my outlook can be accessed from the desktop via a browser. TB obviously runs on desktop.
So im guessing it just doesnt work with any ‘outlook’ mail.
So its a windows outlook issue then?
Not suprised, wndows 8 is a mess.
Theyve ruined hotmail, ruined windows live messenger, and made a half baked os that doesnt know if its a touch screen or or a desktop os.
Check this 2 image it will work if you do it this way.
Thanks, that worked.
I rest my case that its far to complicated a system though.
shame they cant make it simpler.
Well, my email is added, but its taking forever to sync.
Only about 5 mails have appeared, and no other are coming through.
Yet more trouble, or is this normal?
thanks
Edit.
I’ts ok, theve come through now.
Thanks for the help.
I have the portable version, it may come in handy.
