Dual Boot winxp win7
January 29th, 2020
But i’d like to install windows 7 on the second one without messing with windows xp on the first one and then choose which one i want to use at boot. Can someone instruct me as to how i can do that?
Insert Windows 7 CD/USB and choose to install on other partition (not one where is Windows XP).
its not a partition though its a separate hard drive.
Use that separate drive for Win7…Did that long time ago only with partitions..
Is a separate hard drive and a partition not different?
There is no difference.
While installing you can select another partition or another hard drive..
After installing Windows 7..It will create a boot menu that let you chose which OS to boot from..
Alright, and its not going to mess with my existing windows xp install at all right?
Also can i do this while i’m running xp or should i boot from the win7 install disk\usb?
you can also get a ton of info (also your issue) at this link

Yes, boot from the Win 7 install disk..

HINT…Give a name to each of your system partitions, after install..Eg. SysXP and Se7en.. so you won’t get confused when it’s all up and running.
Because when you are running 7, the 7 system drive will be designated “C” and when running XP, the XP system drive will show up as “C”..
Oh well they are also different size drives so that shouldn’t be a problem. Thanks though.
Okay well i finished installing w7 on my second hard drive, but how can i boot to it? Computer still boots directly to windows xp.
GO into your BIOS screen and switch to the drive/partition where win7 has now been installed – to become the 1st recognized boot device. F10, yes, restart.

I used your link to dual boot 1. xp
2. 7 64
highly recommend disregarding the:
Tip
If you get Error loading Operating System after XP restarts:
Using your Windows 7 installation disc, boot to the command prompt at startup. Type in these comands below, and press enter after each one.
bootrec /FixMbr bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /RebuildBcd Exit the command prompt and restart the computer. At this point, Windows 7 should boot up the same way before trying to install XP. Continue to step 8 below and run EasyBCD from Windows 7 instead. goto:
easybcd freeware
1. On the left side of EasyBCD, click on the Add New Entry button
2. add xp installation
3. On the left side of EasyBCD, click on the BCD Deployment button, select (dot) the Install the Windows Vista/7 bootloader to the MBR option, and click on the Write MBR button:
caveat, do not even think about clicking the write mbr button, it will no longer boot to win 7. above that select install bcd to the disk and partion that xp is installed on. then restart and select xp to boot to from menu (may have 2 xp options, mine was the second, but worked fine, the 7 works as well.
will figure out how to edit the boot menu to delete the non working xp boot path but small issue.
thank you for the tutorial link. took some modification for my purpose but still.

That ^^^^ should fix it.
When you install Windows 7 it takes over the boot management but you need it to be the first to boot. So, as says, enter the BIOS and make your Windows 7 HD the first to boot. You should then be given the option when your computer starts up to choose either XP or 7.

Which OS did you have installed first?
If you install 7 with XP already installed, then it should work straight off..No need to repair or BCD..
But if you add XP to 7, then you would need to do what you did or similar.

Well lets hope got it sorted last year, or maybe he decided on Windows 8

by the way … this is an old topic … have you now got things working ok ?
if not ,then hold down the F12 key when you boot up …

during the process had 7 installed first, installed xp, couldn’t boot to seven, screwed up the 7 recovery, reinstalled 7, rebooted to multi menu, which did not work/path issue/for xp. used your sevenforum link for guidance, cherry picked the info relevant for my purpose and experience for easybcd. did what I posted and all is ok. multi menu still has the nonworking xp choice but of no consequence. the second xp works and the 7 works= good enough for the moment.
no doubt any of your links would get the job done, I trust you on this but why guild the lily? I got what I need.
I thank you for that. will keep the link for reference.
yep … as someone said ” … if it ain’t broke …. ”
