CPU fan failed?

August 9th, 2016

So while I was watching a vid on youtube, suddenly my mobo started making a loud continuous beep-like sound. Then I noticed my CPU fan stopped working, BIOS confirmed it. PC does boot, and the fan does try to spin (it jerks a litle forward, then jerks backwards). if i spin it with my finger it spins smoothly, nothing is obstructing the fan itself… Any ideas as to what might have caused this and how should I fix it?
Answer #1
Clean the fan..If still no luck..Maybe a new fan..Also check if the power connector if connected firmly..
Answer #2
Thanks for the reply. The connector is in, and it does transfer electricity. Sometimes the fan does spin faintly for a few seconds and then decays… So its working partially.
Answer #3
its dust on the spindle..it will fail soon, normally.
A fix, no idea, but take out the power supply, clean it best you can, install agaion, then take off fan housing, if possible, and clean, again with something like rubbing alchool and put back in. Use paste if you pull off the chip and see how it goes.
Fan sounds like its dirty, so hard to clean..
Answer #4
You may be able to lubricate it..

Otherwise it may be electrically faulty (especially if it is pulsing) in which case replace it if it is a standard size.
Or otherwise get an aftermarket cooler..

2 possibilities that may cause it are already mentioned which are dust and electronic fault. whichever the problem is , you must solve it quick otherwise u r going to buy more than just a fan. the problem you are facing shouldnt be ignored and hoping that partially working would be enough

you can try a “3-pin to 4-pin Adapter w/ RPM Monitoring” here. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1093/cab-09/3-pin_to_4-pin_Adapter_w_RPM_Monitoring.html?tl=g47c251&id=YBK2h8uA it’s possible the fan is drawing too much for the fan connector on the motherboard. with this, you can power any fan from the power supply directly, AND have the RPM monitoring working..
