Converting DVD-rips to AVI

How can I convert DVD-ripped files (.vob, video_ts etc.) into video file(s) while retaining as much quality as possible?

You can get better compression without much quality loss with x264 encoding, I use MeGUI

Sorenson Squeeze 6 with MainConcept will give better compression than x264 in less time, Also the GUI isnt horrific like MEGUI.

For x264 encode around 700MB, I pick 128kpbs for audio. If you want more m-HD encodes, go for 192kpbs or something
Video bitrate will be chosen by MeGUI if you use predefined size.
