Convert movies

I have a moviecollection on my external harddrive with only 720p or 1080p movies.
If i connect my external harddrive to my Home Cinema System, it doesn’t find any movie..
Is there any way to convert my movies so my HCS can play them, but without losing the quality (screen & sound)?
