Connecting iPod through Ad Hoc Issue

July 28th, 2013

Hi,
So…because I’ve such bad wireless connecting in my room I’m trying to setup an ad hoc connection for my iPod but I’ve stumbled upon some issues.
This is the situation: I currently have my laptop in my room connected to a router through ETHERNET cable.
I am trying to create an ad hoc connection on my laptop, I manage to create one.
I CAN connect to it with my iPod, BUT only if the connection has NO security.
If I however setup an ad hoc connection with WEP or WPA2, my iPod cannot connect to ad hoc, it can find it, but not connect.
What have I done wrong?
I hope you guys understand my explanation!

Answer #1
Have you tried connecting with WPA / TKIP

That option wasn’t available, only WPA2 or WEP.
I manage to create a Hotspot using Connectify, which fortunately allows my iPod to connect even with a WPA2 encryption. So the problem is partially solved, I can now safely connect my iPod to an encrypted ACCESS POINT which I opened up with my laptop.
But if I could manage to do this without using a program that’d be solid.

Aah OK, you don’t say what iPod it is, or your wireless card in your lappie etc, I was just using the settings on my iPod touch G2 to see if I could duplicate your issue.

Ah, I’m sorry, I didn’t think it was relevant.
Anyway, I’ve iPod Touch 4th Generation
Wireless card is “Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter”.
Network Card is “Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller”.
Thanks for going the extra mile to try to solve my problem

OK.
You’ll have to enable the option called Ad-hoc peer to peer option in your WLan settings.
Go to Network Connections
Select the Wireless Connections > Properties
Add new network
Here you have to configure this (insert SSID, encryption and password) and don’t forget to mark the option “This is a Computer –to-computer (adhoc) network ”
Ensure you have the latest drivers for your Atheros card – I usually grab them from ths site below – you’ll more than likely have to manually install as .INF files.
http://www.atheros.cz
I haven’t used that particular card before, only Atheros cards I have available to try at the moment are the AR5008, but you usually get more settings that you may be able to tweak via device manager.
Start > Run (for XP) > devmgmt.msc > right click your Atheros card > properties.
Hope that helps.

Turns out I already have the latest drivers, so this did not fix the issue. :/ But thanks for the response.
I know face another problem with the Connectify program.
If Connectify is turned on, the internet on my laptop can automatically terminate my browsing (I can’t surf), but the connections that are already connected (ie. skype, steam) remains connected. The surfing works at some point, then does not, and then works again, this happens in intervals.
