Computer backup with Acronis true image

December 26th, 2013

I wanted to dual boot windows 7 and xp on my laptop so I can have both. I’m having problems because I installed windows 7 first before xp and went through with the windows 7 boot loader and and it didnt see windows xp as an option and also just ended up messing up the windows xp and only allowing me to boot windows 7. I kept the windows 7 partition and deleted the xp and re installed it to the same parition as it was before hoping it would fix something. Now I have xp running and I have not yet tried messing with the windows 7 repair disk (im still in the windows xp partition i just installed) to start running the computer in windows 7 again.
I downloaded Acronis true image 2011 and was gonna make a backup image of windows xp because it was a real ~censored~ getting all the drivers loaded onto it and after that was gonna use the repair disk to boot into windows 7 and make an image of that partition with Acronis true image 2011.
Now for my questions
1. Can I make a backup image of the windows 7 partition and the windows xp partition separate so I can delete all the partitions after and install the xp (along with the backup image I just made of xp) and than install windows 7 (with the backup partition image) and dual boot them after seeing its a lot easier to load windows 7 after you’ve installed xp.
2. If i get windows 7 and xp up running finally to have the choice to dual boot to either is there a way to make one image of both 7 and xp dual boot togeather so incase I ever need to restore the computer I can do it all thru Acronis true image 2011?
sorry this is probably really confusing but maybe someone can kinda understand what I wanna do

You can back up seperate partitions at the same time with Acronis, if that is what you are trying to ask ?

Yes. But you will ave primary drive problems e.g.:
When you log to XP, example D will be C:
When you log to Win7 D will be C:
so they will change each time. The solution for that will be:
- After re-imaging, Log into Win7, and avoid any dialogs that say restart
the system.
- Open "regedit".
- Go to "KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices".
- Then rename "\DosDevices\D:" to "\DosDevices\CTemp:".
- Then rename "\DosDevices\C:" to "\DosDevices\D:".
- Then rename "\DosDevices\CTemp:" to "\DosDevices\C:".
- Restart system and log back into Vista, it should work now.

However, have the Win7 repair tool ready ^^
In my opinion this hole backup is really unnecessery.
