Classic RPGs for modern systems

July 26th, 2016

I’m just looking for any of the old classic RPGs that are like Divinity for example but even better, from what I hear of the story in Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights and so on. I’ll happily accept any game you can recommend in good faith and that isn’t glitchy or archaic in how it handles. Obviously, an Enhanced, modernized edition is preferable or a GoG release. Also, to add, looking for RPGs with LAN Co-Op since that’s one of the few things I can cheer a friend who had to move away up with.
Thank you in advance, everyone.

I remember playing balders gate on the old ps2 with my mate and really enjoyed it

well , i can give you the name of every single classic rpg but i played all of them at their time mostly late 90’s , so i cant imagine how they will seem to a person who experience it just now. lets start
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
http://www.gamespot.com/might-and-magic-vi-the-mandate-of-heaven/
not only the best rpg i played also the best game of all time for me , among other 760 games i finished and voted gamespot.
Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor
www.gamespot.com/might-and-magic-vii-for-blood-and-honor
almost same quality with previous one but it has a lower rating due to lack of improvement
Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer
http://www.gamespot.com/might-and-magic-viii-day-of-the-destroyer/
same quality still no improvement over 6 so rating gets lower
might and magic series have fanatic fans enough to remake all graphics of game , you can find them at modding sites , especially moddb plus there are sticky topics on gog’s forum. the developer firm 3DO had bankruptcy , ubisoft bought the trademark of might and magic and killed the series , so dont expect official support for these games only through fan sites
Now next to Dungeon and Dragons themed rpgs , before i start that , there were 3 firms best at these at late 90’s , you should also look every rpg they have touched , interplay , black isle and bioware , 2 of them faced bankruptcy , bioware is now part of ea .
Planescape: Torment
http://www.gamespot.com/planescape-torment/
there was a saying about this game , there are 2 ways to make a game legend , first you constantly promote it , make people expect highest quality and at the end you give a worst game to them. second one you make a game with no highlights then release it and never make an official comment about a game , never do a sequel or expansion about it , so people will wonder for years. thats the second type of legend this game have one of the best stories of all times in gaming.
Baldur’s Gate
http://www.gamespot.com/baldurs-gate/ the game overthrow might and magic dominance , there is an enhanced edition now but most think original is better.
Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal
http://www.gamespot.com/baldurs-gate-ii-shadows-of-amn/
http://www.gamespot.com/baldurs-gate-ii-throne-of-bhaal/
conclusion to the epic , better than the first one , there is enhanced edition also for that people thoughts are same , original is better
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale II
http://www.gamespot.com/icewind-dale/
http://www.gamespot.com/icewind-dale-ii/
exactly same as baldur’s gate but shorter , less story driven and only goes on indoors which are different type of dungeons , so a little step back than baldur’s game
Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights 2
http://www.gamespot.com/neverwinter-nights/
http://www.gamespot.com/neverwinter-nights-2/
similar theme with baldur’s gate with better graphics , honestly these games were below my expectations , first one is developed by bioware , second one by obsidian (new company founded by members of defunct interplay and black isle), i liked second one more , especially for story
now a little bit recent games
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords
http://www.gamespot.com/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic/
http://www.gamespot.com/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic-ii-the-sit/
both are unique gem , cant say which one is better, again first one from bioware second one from obsidian also a little less known gem from bioware
Jade Empire
http://www.gamespot.com/jade-empire/
very cool rpg with far east theme , unique at its area
also a honorable mention here www.gamespot.com/the-witcher-enhanced-edition
although second one got better ratings , first witcher is far better in my opinion.
all of the games here have gog versions as you asked and still supported by some modding sites and fan sites to improve the visuals , gog forums have good sticky topics about them. i didnt mention first elder scrolls games like daggerfall and morrowind cuz i dont like them much , i cant suggest i dont like but there are people who keeps them with highest regards. all of the games give above are story driven and needs focus , time consuming , too much dialogue to read to get best out of them . if you are not that type , some other suggested diablo 2 , it would be better for you. but for me diablo even cant be compared with the games above. i will write more if i remember more , actually this is a good topic that oldschool gamers can share thoughts
edit : i remembered more , i will continue to write after someone else make a post , my post is already long enough like the parchments at old rpgs

already answered to you.
For Icewind Dale there is Enhanced edition now as I now that is great as classic one, for Baldur’s Gate I’ve heard that enhanced edition is not great and full of bugs too – so classic baldur’s gate is still better.
Also for some of them that mentioned you can find a lot of high resolution/hd mods I think.
I still play the single player version of D2 !
Yeah, diablo II is not bad.
But Median XL is 10x greater.
