Chromecast vs MKV files

November 2nd, 2019

Since today i’m the owner of a awesome item called Chromecast… yeah right NOT!
The idea is to plug the device in my TV and broadcast from my desktop… At 1st everything went perfect, i easly installed the program, i made the Chromecast connect to my WIFI.
Then i had no idea how to broadcast…LOL. So i Googled it and apprently i just had to drag the movie (MKV-file) into GoogleChrome (or use windows media player which i don’t use at all)
Bam i saw the 1st glimps of the movie on my TV (i have to say i was excited but it was of short duration)
I had no sound at all, the volume icon on my option bar was faded grey!
Could be i did something wrong with GoogleChrome so i tried to use Popcorn Time (another disappointment for me)
After having to w8 ages for it to load i had sound. Yay i was happy onces more
So i’ve decided to test again with a movie on my PC and it still i was not hearing any noise.
I then decided to Google the problem and i could not believe my eyes… Chromecast Does Not Like MKV-files.
Normaly i copy the movies to see on an USB stick and then hook it up my TV but i begin to be lazy.
My question(s) to you :
– is there a media player who’s able to read MKV and broadcast it with Chromecast
– if there isn’t one, what MKV – MP4 converter would you recommend me
be aware the movies are located on my desktop so it has to be a windows program
I hope you lads have a way out of this mess

Instead of a chomecast I would of got a Fire TV stick or a Nexus box and run Kodi on it…
I bought a Chromecast at first and then switched…

Can you properly watch the video file you are trying to playback to your TV via a usb stick? Chromecast local media streaming is in beta stage, you should wait for an update or try using the plex app as mentioned.
Edit: Just found out that Chromecast doesn’t support ac3 audio codec, check if this is the audio stream of your file (with mediainfo for example) and if this is the case, get either avidemux or mkvtoolnix and convert just the audio to aac, leaving the video as-is (copy). Conversion should not take long even for large files.

What sort of speed are you getting on your wi-fi ? Low speed will give crap to zero results.
What type of TV (make/model) do you have ? As suggested above, Plex is pretty decent and free. If you have say a Samsung smart tv, or smart tv box, you could use Kodi (XBMC) or even Samsung link. Please expand on your setup.
To be honest I gave up downloading tv shows and movies some time back, and now just stream everything from an Android box with SBMC (Kodi) (£75) there are plenty of Addons such as Genesis and iStream you can get pretty much anything you want, released just as fast as here if not quicker. I have got a chromecast stick but even though it’s plugged in to the mains and HDMI splitter I have only used it once to stream something from a tablet.

not sure why my videostream connection was ignored – but it plays all video types. No need for conversion.
You only need to pay for it if you want to use playlists.
