Chkdsk Only Runs In Read Only Mode.

November 9th, 2013

Can someone give me suggestions on dealing with this problem. I know my Window 7 has disk errors on it. As my Avg Pc Tool Box, and Tune Up Utilities tell me there are errors, and I have had sudden blue screen shutdowns.
I try to run chkdsk to fix or repair c:/f/r, but I get this in it’s program.
The type of file system is NTFS.. F parameter not specified running check disk in read only mode.
I have tried start f8 command prompt and running it, but that does not help, turned off my anti virus as well, and still cannot run it to fix or repair.
Can someone please tell me how to I change it from read only mode that will not fix problems to be able to fix or repair?

Answer #1
Use HDD Sentinel.
http://www.hdsentinel.com/
You can find it in the apps section.
Answer #2
OS drive can only be checked at boot, not while the OS is active
try running
chkdsk c: /f
include the space (c: /f)
skip /r, takes forever
see if it offers you “at next boot”
Use HDD Sentinel.
if this finds problems them run /r
Answer #3
Thank you very much for your swift response
Answer #4
As edwoodweb has pointed out – you can only run it at boot as it’s your OS drive.
As you are using NTFS you can use Chkdsk /X
Answer #5
Run chkdsk c: /f on your OS drive (if c: is your OS drive) ………. A DOS window will pop up asking if you want to check the OS drive …… you can type Y or N ……………. type Y, press carriage return, the DOS window will close ………. then reboot your computer …. chkdsk will check the drive on bootup.
