Charging before first launch

in the past it used to be recommended to charge fully any device before launching it for the first time to somehow format the battery.
Is it still required even today. I am getting a new smartphone from Sony Ericsson tomorrow so what do I do with it at first?

Yes, most phone companies advise charging for at least 24 hours before the first use. It is supposed to increase the overall life of the battery. Also, every once in awhile let it die completely and charge fully.
Dependent on what type of battery you have, which you failed to mention =(
Standard Li-Ion battery
I though all of the phones have that one nowadays
