Car Audio Installation

August 5th, 2016

I have recently installed 2 car speakers.
One however seems to cut out randomly, mainly when the bass comes in. It only happens however when i have the speakers screwed in to the door. If i leave it sitting in the plastic speaker pocket in the door pa unscrewed it plays fine.
Here is a video:

I am wondering if its got to do with any grounding, or the contact between the speakers, the nails, and the door.
The connections are all on the right way as they can only go on one way. Please help.
Thanks.

Could be that vibration is causing a connector plug or tab to jump around and this is breaking the circuit.
There may be a connector tab actually right on the back of the speaker itself.
If the speaker is housed in some kind of enclosure, open it and take a look, tighten up any connector tab that seems a bit loose.

the wires are all good. I them soldered on to make the connection permanent. it just cuts out at some point whenever it is in contact with the screw that is in the door. so im wondering about the grounding and how to eliminate it ?

Without some pics, I don’t see how anyone would be able to help you resolve this issue.

Maybe a connection lug is grounding out to the frame of the speaker.
Check with a multimeter if you can’t see anything obvious.
Also could the connection lugs be grounding out on metalwork inside the door?
Or is there a wire getting squashed when the speaker is bolted in.
Insulation tape up the connections.

It’s probably pinching a wire to the metal of the door when u screw it down. The bass probably vibrates the wire just enough to make a intermittent short to ground causing the speaker to cutoff. It would either be that or the speaker itself is somehow making a short to chassis ground. Maybe even the wires running from the backside of the cone to the magnet are making contact with the door or metal frame of the speaker. Either way it sounds like something is shorting to ground. Will just need to look for loose or pinched wires or anything that could cause the short (especially the area around the speaker and any screws).

That sounds like a grounding issue to me.
When you screw in the speaker, are the terminals so close that they might be touching the door pa? If they are, that could be causing a short. I doubt the screw itself is causing the short, as you are normally screwing into the plastic speaking housing – (might be different for your speakers though).
Can you SWAP the speakers over… If the problem still persists with the same speaker on the other side of the car, then I would say that there is a problem with the speaker itself. If it turns out to be a problem definitely on that side of the car only, then you will have to investigate it further.
I suggest swapping the speakers temporarily, and see what happens.

Ok thanks. Yeah I will try swapping the speakers around to try eliminate possibilities.

also check that the speakers a “phased” properly
(+) wire to (+) terminal (-) wire to (-) terminal
