Can’t get any computer to detect my iPod Classic

August 4th, 2016

Everything was working fine with my iPod classic. Today i plugged it in to sync some new music on, and iTunes said it was corrupt. So i decided to let it restore the firmware. First of all the restoring thing took forever (much longer than usual), but it finished eventually. However, when i restarted iTunes i got the same error again (corrupt iPod). So i let it restore the iPod again (at this point the iPod was still fine). This time however iTunes crashed in the middle of the restore, and my iPod no longer boots. All it shows is the error message: “Use iTunes to restore”. I cant put it in disk mode either! When i press menu + select the iPod reboots, but i cant get it to go into disk mode or anything. I have tried connecting it to a MAC, windows xp, windows vista, and ubuntu computer, none of these detect the iPod as a disk or mp3 player. Does anyone have any idea how i can restore the iPod ?
It is a black ipod classic by the way.

Have you tried resetting the ipod? Press and hold the middle button and menu button.
Answer #2
When i press menu + select the iPod reboots, but i cant get it to go into disk mode or anything
Like i said when i hold the middle button and menu button it just reboots the ipod and then goes back to the “use iTunes to restore” message

Bring your iPod to the nearest Apple store to be sure, but I had that same problem with my new classic, and they told me that everyone one in something odd iPods has a faulty hard drive that can break after about a year. If you don’t have a warranty anymore, they don’t do anything to help you, and you’re gona have to go buy a new one T_T You get a 10% discount though by turning in your old one to recycle =P

I would say your best bet is to bring it as well since chances are if you’ve tried to restore it and are still getting nowhere that calling them will end up with you having to send it out.

Answer #8
i cant get it to go into diagnostic mode either (it just keeps going back to the Use iTunes to Restore message) , though thanks for mentioning that, i didnt know about it.
I think the firmware is completely gone or corrupt, but what i dont get is why i cant access the device at all ? do you think the HDD is dead ? I have the firmware for the iPod, i just need to have Ubuntu recognize it so i can manually flash the fimrware using “dd”

So i finally went to the apple store a week ago and they replaced my iPod, no questions asked. The tech just looked at it for about 4 minutes, said that it was beyond repair and gave me a BRAND NEW device, apple must be doing quite well i assume.
Answer #10
