Backing up + reformating

August 6th, 2016

How can I backup things like drivers, music, pictures etc and then reformat my computer?
I always wanted to reformat, and it’s been at least 3 years since it’s been done. I’m really nervous about how I’m suppose to get my drivers again when the computer isn’t even usable since it’s being formatted.
Can someone give me steps on how to do it properly and save some of my things.
PS. Is there a program that backs up everything so i can save it say onto a disk, and then put the disk in after formatting and it restores everything?

Answer #1
All you need are your network drivers. The rest you can just get online when you’re booted.
Answer #2
How can I figure out what drivers I need to download? Also, How can I save all my music/Pictures/Games ?

1. You can save all that on other partition or external HDD. Drivers you can back up with DriverGenius or download original drivers from manufacturers website…
2. You have a plenty of apps that do backup.. I would recommend you Acronis Backup
How can I figure out what drivers I need to download? Also, How can I save all my music/Pictures/Games ?
Download CPU-Z, tell us what Motherboard you have ( model number too and I will find you drivers all you need to tell for what OS you want drivers ), and you can download GPU-Z and tell us what GPU you have… And you will get drivers in a few minutes!
Answer #4
Ok, I have my windows XP media center edition CD. I will backup my programs with the Acronis Backup software. Where can I find out what drivers I need to install? Can someone give me steps please I really don’t want to mess it up

Thank you for those links. Can you tell me if these are the right steps:
1. I save my files with the backup software onto a USB.
2. I boot with my windows XP media center edition CD.
3. I reformat with the CD following the steps.
My question is, How do i install the network drivers, monitor drivers, etc, So i’m able to run things properly, and then go to those websites to download those things.

First you will download drivers (from those links) and save them to USB ( clean, without viruses ), and then you can make backup of files that you need ( on USB, or External HDD ), insert Windows XP Installation CD and restart. Go in BIOS change boot priority to 1st boot CD/DVD, 2nd HDD, press F10 and enter, wait for message Press any ky to continue boot from CD/DVD, press any button and installation will start.
Follow instruction, format partitions with NTFS, wait for files to be copied, and wait for another reboot. after reboot DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING, and wait for setup to continue. After that, you will see windows startup screen ( after 20 minutes or so… ) and then you need to transfer drivers ( files from links that you will download ) and then run 1 by 1. This is order ( well if you ask me )
1. Install Chipset drivers ( it will automatically install Etherent drivers etc… )
2. Audio drivers
3. Video drivers
Restart as many times you need ( but you can eject installation disk after setup is completed )
And thats it… You can return backup and thats it!

So it will show the start up screen, I put my USB in, go to my computer, and install the files from my USB?
After installing those files, will I be able to connect to the internet?
Will I have all my Sound, Video, Monitor, speakers, etc working?

Well obviously doh…. That is why you INSTALLING DRIVERS! And NO, copy drivers to desktop and then run them, one by one!
And this is how your installation process will look ( installation of Windows XP )
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx
( don’t pay attention when he register OS you can skip that! )
Also I will make you a few pictures just to see something, what you need to run after installation from desktop!
Answer #18
Ohhh I see, That’s how it looks when installing Windows XP back from the CD. So after that, I will be able to go onto my desktop, right?
Then, I install the things from my USB, After I install those, Will i be able to connect to the internet? And will everything else be fine as well?
Ok, thank you, i will wait for those pictures as well. God bless.
EDIT:
I have a “RESTORE” Folder on my C-Drive, it was made by the guy who usually fixes my computer. It has a Drive Snapshot in it, and this is what it looks like
http://img340.imageshack.us/i/snapshot1dx.png/ (actual program)
http://img707.imageshack.us/i/snapshot2w.png/ (what the program saved and will restore if i double click it)
Can i use this program to make a backup of what I want, and then use it after i reinstall windows xp again? Have you used this before?

After you install OS, you will see desktop!
Downloaded drivers transfer from USB to desktop, and start installing…
After you install drivers ( and restart…. that will be required ) everything will work, and YES you will be able to go on internet because you have INSTALLED DRIVERS!
If you did everything good then yeah, everything will be just fine!
P.s. ( Why are you installing Windows XP Media Center?! Why not Windows XP SP3?! )

Ok, I will use USB’s to do my backups!
I’m not sure how to work with the ISO’s etc and burn them. Also, Won’t the serial get black listed since many people use it after a while? I don’t wanna go through the trouble of getting new serials unless this one won’t get blacklisted lol.
Thanks bro

dont forget to backup your emails & bookmarks/favorites if you want to! use moz backup if you use firefox to browse or under IE import export under the file tab
Answer #32
Ok thanks, I’m going to do it after school today.
My only question was, do monitors, mouse, keyboards, and HARDDRIVES install themselves? Thank you.
Answer #33
do monitors, mouse, keyboards, and HARDDRIVES install themselves?
Yes but there are some exceptions:
Monitor – If recognized as “Default Monitor” you would
have to install it’s driver to avoid having unsupported
resolutions/refresh rates listed on display properties.
Mouse/Keyboard – If your mouse have special buttons (Other the the
ordinary right, left clicks and scroller) you would likely have to install
it’s driver for those to work,Same goes for your keyboard if it’s
a multimedia one.
HDD – If your HDD is of the SATA type you would have to get
into the BIOS and define the SATA Controller to work in IDE
mode or turn off RAID,Otherwise windows setup will not detect it,Do note that if you have a laptop you may not
have this setting,In that case you will have to download
the SATA driver from the manufacturer site and integrate
it with N-Lite (if installing XP) or just put it on a flash drive (If
installing VISTA/Win7) then just add it during setup.

My only question was, do monitors, mouse, keyboards, and HARDDRIVES install themselves? Thank you.
you will need sata drivers if your hard drives are sata if they are the older type ide drives xp will install those and the others for you! there are versions of xp with the sata drivers added http://www.google.com?t=6978935&highlight= I found this one It should work ok! or consider upgrading to win 7 it will install sata drivers for you! if you have ide drives win xp sp3 will be fine but it does not hurt to download all your drivers first and put then on a usb or external drive! example chipset audio video as the others have mentioned! ps if your laptop is 3 years old the harddrive is probably ide
