Apple tv Gen 2 and xbmc

Hi all, I’m thinking of buying this to run xbmc. My doubt is can it play 720p mkv from a external harddrive or is it just streaming. Is it easy to do and do I have to avoid certain firmware to do the hack. Please can someone guide me. I’ve tried google but different sites say different things.
