Anyone using the new WinRAR 5.0 beta 2?
August 7th, 2016
After reading the “What’s New” documentation, I am hesitant to upgrade.
http://www.rarlab.com/rarnew.htm
I am anxious to hear if anyone has upgraded to the newest version and get their opinions on it.
It appears to have many advantages over version 4, but does not play well with archives created with earlier versions.
Also; Can version 4 and version 5 coexist on the same computer?
idk if you could install winrar twice on the same pc…are you compressing files with winrar? and uploading them or are you just downloading files and uncompressing them? if your doing option 2 i would stick with what you have or upgrade I really dont think it will matter…honestly my version is like 2-3 years old and it works with any rar i download and uncompress..
It wouldn’t really make sense if the newer version wasn’t compatible with older archives. Maybe this is just a slight bug with the “beta”… Two versions, might not be the best idea to have them both installed at the same time as it will most likely cause conflicts.
Personally I would wait until it’s out of beta.
It works fine with older archives, Its the older versions that cant open the new archives.
The installer is just an archive you can extract both versions so yes they can coexsist.

Taken straight from the change log : ” 8.c) old style extension based arcname.rNN volume names are not
supported by RAR 5.0 archives, which use only arcname.partN.rar volume names”.
I understand this to mean that rar files ending in *.r01, r02, etc. will not be able to open using WinRAR v5; Only files ending in *.part1.rar, etc. So, it is possible that you would get archives that will be useless from people who are still using early versions of WinRAR.
This is just one of my hesitations.
RAR 5.0 archives not WinRAR 5.0
old style extension based arcname.rNN volume names are not supported by RAR 5.0 archives
