Anti-virus/Firewall combo recommendations for Win 7
August 6th, 2016
We have a contract with a company to support their network gizmo’s etc, out of 74 My Book Live 2TB’s they have managed to brick approx. 50 of them – hence my frazzled brain, got 36 currently working at least.
At home on the Win 7 rigs/lappies I have got Comodo Internet Security Premium ( of course) installed. There is not much the matter as to why I want a change, just really want some suggestions from what people are using that they find good. I’ll admit I have never picked up any form of virus with them, but even though Comodo Firewall ranks low in the on-line testing, I have never managed to breach it from outside the network. The version I am using is a couple of years old now, but if it works then don’t fix it is usually my motto. It updates definitions daily just fine (that is another must, has to update at least once per day) – Heuristics and other settings is not really a must but would be useful for the a/v.
The anti-virus solution MUST have real-time protection as the kids use some of the machines, so that is a given. The combo can be two manufacturers I am not bothered as long as they do the job. In-built sandbox feature is also not a must, as there are separate sandbox apps for that I use.
This kind of Q usually gets on my nerves as it is very commonly asked and answered, but just for once I would like to ask a Q, however commonly asked, asnd as previously pointed out I need a change I think, although this app does it’s job well, esp with the teens loose on the machines. My line of thinking is that this will soon be discontinued.
Please could someone supply some suggestions for me, and I’ll give them a good look-up. I also believe this is the first Q for help I have ever asked here
Many thanks in advance, also I cannot get here often, but will try my best, so please don’t get offended if you don’t get a reply within seconds/minutes or even hours
All suggestions gratefully appreciated, but please, no Norton ! I did use Symantec Corporate until it was discontinued, same with Kerio firewall, both excellent but at a loss now for my thinking.
Thanks guys/gals
Hey, , running 3 PC’s and 3 Laptop’s all with ESET Smart(approx 18 months), occasionally run SPYHunter (as its more thorough than Malwarebytes), do the odd run with Housecall, but its mostly down to common sense as you know(check Autoruns, check msconfig, services etc……you know if you have a reason to check (or should). I used to use Comodo before Eset, never had a problem with it. I have 6 months left with ESET so suggestions would also be appreciated by myself, although it would take some good reasons for me to change (all legit).
Thanks – I will give ESET a good lookup tomorrow at work
I hope you get some good suggestions too
The kids like Eset as it’s quite indiscreet (as do I, but then if you avoid ~love~ you don’t get ~love~!), brief popup in the corner for updates and that’s it, no ‘xxxxx’ is updating and will destroy your neighbourhood if you don’t comply

So true, but I am more worried about the kids – I work on pc’s and networks day in day out, I don’t need to come home and find the kids have pressed a banner somewhere, lol.
I am tending to think Corporate a/v and use a hard firewall, I can easily get Corp serials from work, am just looking for alternative suggestions here. I don’t even mind if Roberto400 gives me some help, but I haven’t seen him post for ages.
I run SPYHunter on the kids PC’s too and it never finds anything, they never see banners (adblock+ may help with that though), ESET does auto block any known bad sites……….. damn I think I’ve committed myself again for renewal , but look around, what suits one doesn’t necessarily suit another.
I don’t care what the kids see, they are 13 and 15 – if they want to see porn then so be it. It’s the worse things like bestiality that I don’t want them to watch, I tend not to use site-blockers. Even youtube has vids of Mexican cartel guys beheading women, I watched one and wish I could take it back…can’t exactly block youtube.
I know where you are coming from a few years back I watched a shooting, it will live with me forever
Edit: it ain’t like in the movies.
This poor woman was only about 25-30 years old, I’m sure she was drugged up as she didn’t make any complaints, just kneeling one minute – then head off,the body fell forward and the guy was holding her head, only a small 6 inch knife too euch.
Er…….Thanks for sharing, some things don’t need sharing , damn disappear again will you (just kidding)
lolz – I won’t send you the link then ?
Please don’t, otherwise this will be moved to Funstuff , is there nobody else here, they normally jump on the AV questions
i see no “free” criteria so will line up premium ones starting with best ones by considering only protection rating not usability like less false positives or effect of performance on system and all have firewall with their internet security suites.
1- Kaspersky , Bitdefender
2- Eset , Trendmicro , Norton
3- Webroot , F-Secure , G-Data
for the info , Kaspersky have the least false positive among all , followed by Eset.
Norton has best firewall followed by Kaspersky and Bitdefender. I dont personally test them i m just making synthesis of what i read from independent labs and experts.
needless to say something about Eset which i like , it detects PUP and adware unlike any other AV solution with almost %100 accuracy. all of those will be sufficient if you are going to protect a basic pc , Kaspersky is just a step ahead of others. if you are going to protect very important files , you need to rent an advanced firewall which have multiple layers to breach and interactive protection from employees. it costs a few thousand dollars per year
Along with your favorite anti-virus (I use MSE, can’t get much easier than that! (or Defender for Win 8)….And you don’t have hassles cracking and updating it )
Also run Malwarebytes Premium in real time.
It picks stuff that anti-virus/ anti-spyware can miss and also blocks off nasty websites, unless you exclude them.
Well worth it!
