A Really Dumb Question Regarding External HDD’s

August 6th, 2016

At the moment, all of my downloads are saved to internal HDD’s, and l occasionally download some of the files to a usb stick, which l can either plug into my TV or DVD player to watch.
If l purchased an external HDD, without a separate power supply, could l just unconnect it from the computer and plug it into the TV/DVD player?

yes

There are no dumb questions, mate. The drive itself should be “portable”, to be able to work via the usb port only. I’d recommend one fron Toshiba or maybe this Transcend one:

Yes, portable drives derive their power from the USB port.
Usually this works well, but some old equipment may have a problem supplying enough power.
For this reason, don’t use USB extension cables with the drive.

They didnt answer your question to a T soz…
The majority of usb hard drives are in fact powered by the usb cable, but there are also ones which are powered by the wall (a/c).. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/all-computers--tablets/seagate/seagate-expansion-desktop-hard-drive-5tb/935944/
