4GB RAM on windows xp, possible?
August 3rd, 2016
XP 32 bit will only detect 3 GB and a bit…Can’t remember the exact number..XP 64 bit supports the full 4GB..But nor worth it…If you have to go Vista 64 bit..
Buy it, put it in your pc and if you can use 4GB ram, you have an 64bit system.
If you can’t use you’re having an 32Bit System.
Don’t know another way.

waste of money if it’s not 64 don’t you think? :p

ok thanks i have just read on the forum somewhere that xp 32bit with SP3 is the equivalent to xp 64bit with SP2 because their is no SP3 for 64bit, is this true?
and could my 4GB work then? i have SP3 so i’ll probably have 32 bit Grtz
I think if you right click on my computers and click on properties, its tells u what OS u have (32bit or 64bit). 32bit can use up to 3GB or a little more. 64bit supports more than 3GB too…
My advice, go for 64bit windows 7. I’m using the RC version. Its free for 1 yr from the Micros*ft website. Its much better than Vista and it would be fantastic with 4 GB ram.
But make sure all your hardware are compatible with 64bit OS.
And its definately not a waste of money! I recently switched from 32bit vista to 64bit windows 7 but I did’t have to change any hardware.
And no, a 64bit OS defines a whole different structure of operating. Its can never be same as a 32bit no matter what Service pack u put on it.

sorry no it wont use more than the 3and a bit gig no matter what sp is used I think the bit varies depending on other hardware features
Even if it doesn’t use quite all the ram it should not cause bsod or any other problems and you will be ready for Windows 7..
I totally agree!

Vista has never been a bad OS, it’s because of the manufacturers of the hardware, they where to lazy to create good, working drivers
Answer #12
I have 4Gb. You get around 3.25 GB from it. Go ahead use it. It will be a little spare also, if you wish to upgrade the OS a bit
@ all – Can you tell me, can 32bit be upgraded to 64, without formatting or changing anything on the system ?

nope! a 64bit upgrade requires a fresh install.
It will format your whole C (or whatever u choose) drive or it will leave the data intact but it will stop the functioning of ur old OS.
There is no option of ‘Upgrade’ from 32-64bit.
And please note that the softwares u run on it should have a 64bit version available or the 32bit should be supported by the 64 bit OS. I have had no problems with the softwares i use. But google your favorite softwares to see if they will work fine on 64bit OS.

Bah! Thats the only reason I still havent updated. I have a lot of softwares, with a lot of settings, which i do not wish to re install. Ad Indian download speeds suck. Its gonna be quite a pain. Can I dual boot 32 and 64 Bit from different partitions ?
or it will leave the data intact but it will stop the functioning of ur old OS.
Can you highlight more on this ?

Yea, reinstalling softwares is a real pain in the ass.
You should probably sit tight till the final retail version of windows 7 64bit comes out. Till then research to make sure each of ur hardware components supports 64bit OS.
And Indian download speeds don’t suck, its not bad. I live in India. Of course its in no comparison with america and europe. But sit tight! Some companies are launching 16Mbps and we just got 3G!

This means it will install the new 64bit Os. It will be a fresh copy of the OS but the old files on ur drive will not be removed. you can access stuff like ur movies, pics, etc but not the programs or games that were installed on ur old OS.

The only reason I do not wish to upgrade the OS is the softwares, or would have got OS X or something like. Im more of a designer, and although my computer supports stuff, but the Windows OS spoils it. I do not wish to change to Windows 7, unless I can dual Boot. My PC is very perfectly configured for my used, and everything is categorised.

Windows XP supports 3.24 GB of RAM. To get the full support, install the latest updates from Microsoft’s website. I have done this and now my XP 32-bit supports 4GB.

I have a registry that makes your OS genuine. Even Microsoft will be unable to detect it.

your computer doesn’t support 4GB, it can dedect the 4 GB but it can only use arround 3.7 GB, no matter what people say, the 32 bit algoritm just makes it IMPOSSIBLE to use 4 GB ram on a 32 bit os.
