Building a computer for music production. Need help!

September 23rd, 2013

Question one. I already have a pc desktop. I was thinking about just updating everything on it rather then building one from scratch. Is this possible? or will I be better of getting new parts for everything?
If I cant. Where should I start and what would I need?
If I can:
Its a that great of a computer. Not too good of music production. or even games etc. I don’t have the specs right now since its in my moms room and shes sleeping lol I’ll update as soon as I can.I believe its a Compaq computer from around 2007. What would I need to to make it into a beast. I need to run fl studio and multiple VSTS. Trying to run big VSTS like omnisphere, trilogy etc. What parts (like ram, memory) and how many gigs and stuff would I need. if anyone can help me. And what should be my budget for turning it in to a true beast lol
Thanks for the help guys!

Answer #1
start from scratch
what’s your overall budget ?
ballpark figure will do as a starting point
and you want to build it yourself
if gaming’s not important you can save quite a bit on a video card
you may be able to use parts from the other PC, like case, PSU, DVD drive and even video card if it’s removable and if gaming’s not important
Answer #2
Do not care about the gaming. And I can slowly build it over 2 3 months than im willing to spend around $1000 on it
Is it hard to build or almost anyone can do it. I’m great with computers but not hardware wise lol
Answer #3
Am I better off just buying a cpu? All I need this computer for is to run Fl studio/ableton. And big VSTs like i posted before. I know I have to buy a sound interface for the clicks and stuff during recording. But I need a computer that can handle multiple vsts and samples at a time.
Answer #4
need to know the specs of your current PC
but with out replacing mobo/CPU/memory as a unit just a CPU will be a minor upgrade in most cases

Answer #7
how much memory is in it, just the 1 gig now ?
“PC3200 is DDR SDRAM” is your memory spec
you have 4 slots, 2 filled with 512mb sticks if it’s the stock setup
you can add 2 1gb sticks for around $40-50 maybe
just google “PC3200 is DDR SDRAM” to see what’s available
these would make the PC a bit quicker by eliminating some slow disk access by keeping more in faster memory
Athlon 64 (V) 3500+ 2.2 GHz is your current CPU
a “Athlon 64 X2 4800+” SHOULD FIT your socket 939 mobo
google “Athlon 64 X2 4800+”” to see what’s available
the X2 CPU is dual core and your current CPU is single core
so if you music apps are dual core enabled you should gain some conversion speed there
possible other dual core CPU’s
Athlon 64 X2-3800+~4600+ (Manchester)
Athlon 64 X2-4400+~4800+ (Toledo)
