Making a TV rip server

January 29th, 2020

Hi there, I have a server under my bed that i’d like to use to Rip TV shows with. It runs Debian, so no windows programs please

  • How would it record the TV (I live in the UK, and there is no freeview where I live, but I do get sky (no sky+))?
  • How would it skip ads, etc?
  • How would it know when to start/stop/what shows are on?

Thanks, John.
Answer #1
you could use MythTV to rip tv with a compatible capture device.
i don’t know what you would use for cutting adds. i use HDTVtoMPEG2 & VideoReDo
you set up a schedule & guide to record shows, like tivo.
Answer #2
Why capture it yourself when you can leave it to the pro rippers involved in the scene, and then just download…

Well, because 1) I have a crap internet connection and 2) I love learning to do new things with computers.

Sounds like a good plan. How do you propose I connect my (or a if i buy another one) sky box to my linux box? How also, do you propose I sync schedule from the sky box to mythTV? I have tried looking for articles on this, but to no avail.
