Graphics cards and PCI-e Express help.

Hello, I bought my PC a year ago and want to upgrade my graphics card.
At the moment i have a 8600gt i have overclocked it as far as possible and just need something better!
My question:
– Can i use one of the new nVidia GeForce 9-series GPU’s (such as the 9800gtx) on my motherboard? I know they use PCI-Express 2.0 but i don’t know if my board can use them.
My PC Specs:
– AsRock ConRoe1333-D667
– Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66Ghz @ 2.81Ghz
– Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512mb
– 2GB RAM (Can’t remember what speed or make!)

Though push the boat out and get a HD 4870 or GTX280

PCIe 2.0 cards is backward compatible with PCIe 1.1 mobos.

And thanks for your recommendations, i may just do that if i have enough money. In your opinion do you think i should just save some money and buy a 8800ultra?

PCIe 2.0 effectively doubles bandwidth and offers better flexibility, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 1.1.

i not really to sure with only a 500w supply.
btw i have an 8600gt but mine is only 256mb on sale for 200usd when they first came out plus ultra 500w PS.
PCI Express 3.0 will make PCI Express 2.0 look like junk.

the board i just got about 2 months ago use 2.0 but my 8600gt card is 1.1

your board will take any PCI-e out today
and nothing takes advantage of PCI-e 2.0 yet so not to worry about upgrading
and 500wt should be fine as well

was just about to say that, nothing takes advantage of all the bandwith in pci-e 2.0. i recommend you stop going to for help on this stuff since everyone is telling you the wrong information. It will be better of going to a site that only talk’s about pc’s.

GDDR 3 is different to DDR memory. So even if your pc supports only DDR2 memory, your pci-e slot can run any pci-e device (even over GDDR5). Just note that higher cards are bottlenecked by dual cores if the resolution for games arent high enough depending on the monitor

Single cores and quad cores bottleneck a graphics card. If you have something like a core 2 duo at a high clock speed and a core 2 quad at 2.4 the core 2 duo will be better for gaming.

You spec is/was the same as mine
i had a different mobo tho
But you could got for a 8800 or a 9600 i think with a 500W PSU as i think the 9800 needs a 550W and the GTX 200s need more i think

the 4870 is the fastest or the bunch
8800 9800 are about even so the lower price is what I’d get
for the other hardware you have the 4870 is overkill

Get the radeon 4850, much better card. Will max everything out except far cry 2 and crysis
